Damn, why did they stop making MechWarrior games. I have fond memories of playing Mech2 in 640 high res mode on my Packard Bell Pentium 75mhz. The thing would chug everytime there are a big battle going onscreen.

Because Microsoft bought it and tried to turn it into something for their Xbox console (more FPS, less strategy), and when that didn't work, they killed it off.

There was some studio that did a tech-demo for a new Mechwarrior game a couple years back, but I hadn't heard anything about it since then. It was pretty sweet, except for the guy playing it had no clue trying to fight an Atlas close quarters in a city... I mean, the Atlas is the undisputed king of close quarters fights.

AFAIK it was akin to a trailer during a story sequence. The Warhammer IIC (presumably) was caught at close range by an Atlas through thick smoke and had no chance to detect it.

I own all the mech games with every expansion and I'm glad they're more twitchy in this game. Watching the teaser and the cockpit view vids gave me a bit of a chubby. Down with boring old slow mechs, I want something that MOVES :D

Don't get me wrong, I like something that moves as well. But it needs to be done tastefully. You should feel like you are piloting the machine, not actually "being" the machine. And you do that by having set speeds for motions and alignments, not simply how fast you can swish your mouse on a mousepad.... This then lets you have different "feels" for different mechs. And really can bring out the differences and roles for things like light, medium, heavy, and assault mechs, or even just mech to mech, or weapon system to weapon system (i.e. you may be able to aim a gun carried on the mech's hand/arm faster than something in the torso, or the torso mounted gun may simply only shoot in a very limited arch, thus having for weapon systems to have split cross-airs depending on what that particular one is aiming at... or have upgrades for certain internal weapon control systems which might allow one system to spit the cross-air, or not, or limited control of how many you can split....). There is so much you can do when you thing about it, all of which would really differentiate the mechs from each other instead of being the old, let me get to the biggest mech first style gameplays. All of this would give real unique reasons to use different mechs for different situations or even different configurations of a single mech for those different situations as well....

This. I REALLY want a new mech game, but this seems like a TF2 reskinned.

Mechs shouldn't be twitchy, and the first thing I thought of in the opening scenes was "ooh... that building's about to fall over on it's own - will this be mechs+destructible environments?"

Turns out it's really neither.

You guys want to get Mechwarrior Living Legends

This is the closest thing to Mechwarrior 5 that your going to get since the official new one has closed down.

We need this game. We need it badly. It feels like the mech genre has faded out, and we need someone to bring it back. This looks amazing.

Yes.

Mech Genre and the Space Sim ala Xwing/TieFighter genres are both completely dead, and they are what I grew up playing.

Could you imagine a Space Sim game with over 100 players dogfighting. I have lost all hope in LucasArts trying to make any decent star wars games, but a new Xwing vs. Tie Fighter game is just what I need right now.

I wish both would get a good helping of good games, but X3 was the last space sim in ages. Before that there was only X2 forever. I don't remember any other good ones between Freespace and X2. There were some games like Freelancer, but that was more of a third person shooter in space.

Thankfully we did have Chromehounds for Mech type games, which kinda felt like a precursor to MechWarrior. Loved the uber flexible mounting and component system. I could do some funky looking Hounds that were hard to really destroy.

Hawken, like others have said, basically looks like modern multiplayer FPS reskinned if the gameplay movies are anything to go by. Less "walking tank" and more "infantry that just looks like a mech but still moves as infantry." Not what I'm looking for, personally, but still it'd be nice to get some new blood besides the occassional Gundam or Armored Core series (I'm ignoring that Front Mission crap they released earlier this year; they shoulda put out another FM TBS).

*sigh* Now I'm going to have to drag out my Steel Batallion setup again. Oh, that also reminds me; I live 45 minutes from where they have a Firestorm Mech simulator. I need to hit them up sometime.

this looks awesome.

re space sims, i'm sure most of you know know this already, but check out the fs2 source code project. there are a couple great mods on the works, but as always, progress is very, very slow on these.

Sign up to be in the Hawken Beta here. I'm not sure if the 12/12/12 date quoted is for the beta, or retail release..

Sign up three friends and they will reserve your callsign for you. (My referral link)

Signed up, got my referral link, and posted it on Facebook. Within ~15 minutes I had three people recruited. I got my pilot name reserved (Dankk).

Fortunately it's really simple to sign up, and three people isn't a lot at all. I hope I can get into the beta.

Saw this earlier today. Signed up and referred myself to 3 of my junk emails and got my tag secured. I have to admit though, I am more cautious about the game now though than before, going free to play :/

Alpha 2 invites went out. Anybody get one?

I'm so jealous. I never get alpha/beta invites, and now all these newbies with 1 post are on the forums saying "oh I got an invite for this game, what is it again?"

I've been playing the alpha for a bit.

It's OK. The audio, visuals, and animations are nice. The feel of walking around in a giant machine is pretty well-done. But that's it.

Otherwise, HAWKEN is a shallow, simple-minded deatchmatch shooter in mech suites. That's all I can really say. The game isn't bad; but just "meh". No lasting appeal for me. I might play a little more if I feel like it, but there isn't much about it that draws me in. Pretty underwhelming.

I got an alpha invite today as well. Need to set it all up and give it ago, just busy with Guild Wars 2 and mostly Borderlands 2 atm.

There is this PAX video by Totalbiscuit which i saw yesterday. The visuals are pretty impressive if i migt add and the side dodge along with hologram deployment and turret placements seemed good. It did seem very generic though, a very been there done that feel. Maybe more game modes would do the trick perhaps?
