Finally got around to uploading some of my Hawaii pictures and figured this was as good a time as any to remember its pre-hurricane glory

It started out as all my trips seem to with a Southwest flight delay that would cause us to miss our connection. On the way to the airport to get that sorted a 4' metal bar decided to joust with my car

For those of you unfamiliar with cars that metal bar leading from the ground and passing through the wheel well into my trunk isn't supposed to be there:

I started feeling like the Universe was trying to tell me we shouldn't go to Hawaii but I took solace in the fact that while I did spend 5 minutes trying to get the metal bar out of my car it had miraculously not hit or damaged something important (Tire, luggage, wife etc)

So we continued on our new route of Detroit -> Nashville -> Los Angeles -> San Jose -> Honolulu -> Maui. Totally direct and not wearing at all. Even better our Alaskan Airlines flight to Maui was delayed making it a tight connection in Honolulu to get to Island Air to Maui. Long story short we paid $60 to 'change' to a later flight to get our checked bags to Maui while we boarded our original flight with just our backpacks. Once there we got the rental car, lunch and stopped by Costco for snacks and drinks while we waited for the luggage to arrive.

We actually managed to get to our hotel only a couple of hours after we had planned although we were much wearier and sweatier.

I don't know if we impressed the Universe with our perseverance\masochism or it just felt bad for us but somehow my wife's award reservation got jumped 5 categories. This was the view we saw when we opened the door to our room:

And all the stress from the past day's worth of traveling melted away. Later we figured out the room was bigger than our first apartment together (875sq ft vs 900sq ft hotel room)

We spent 4 incredibly nice days at the Maui Fairmont. Everyone was incredibly friendly and the property was gorgeous.

I completed my first ever scuba dive in the Lahiana area. I was a bit nervous at first especially since I was the only first timer in the group but the instructor was great and we were able to get up close to quite a bit of marine life. I was also concerned that I would be the one to bring the group back early (since newbs tend to go through their oxygen the fastest) but managed almost 60 minutes on an 80 cubic feet O2 tank which is far better than the 45min he estimated and one of the longer first timer dives hes had.

Unfortunately the pictures he took haven't made it yet but I think he might have more pressing matters on his mind at the moment. Still it was amazing and I know I'll be diving more. Great experience if anyone has the chance to do it

We also hit up the Molokini crater for some snorkeling. It wasn't bad but we both liked the snorkeling in Barbados more. The coral was better at Molokini but you're closer to the marine life in Barbados. The crowds weren't as bad in Barbados either. The smallest catamaran we could find was 48 people which still leaves plenty of clueless kickers compared to the 12 person catamaran we snagged in Barbados.

One night we headed over to a Luau at the Marriott. Very good show with great food. A tad pricey but that seems to be almost everything in Hawaii

The last full day I chauffeured my wife around the road to Hana. Its a bit wearing only because of the length and the masses of clueless tourists that show up later in the day (One guy parked on the one lane bridge while he and his wife got out to take pictures...). Still there is definately some great scenery along the road although the 2 mile hike to the Waimoku falls was the best. On a random side note - when did 2 mile hikes in bikinis and hiking boots become a thing? I'm not complaining mind you just surprised.

After the 4 days we headed to Oahu for a 3 day stay at the Doubletree (slight change in hotel level). A bit more on the functional level but nice enough. Honolulu is quite a change from Maui although I didn't find it as bad as some people. Sure its a big city but, at least while I was there, the traffic wasn't too bad and it still seemed pretty relaxed although certainly expensive. I will say the beach was pretty terrible compared to other options. I saw three bandaids floating in the water in Hawaii and all 3 were at Waikiki despite us only spending a short time there. I'd much rather take a short car\taxi\bus ride to the North Shore than stay on that beach.

We got up early to get to Pearl Harbor and had a great visit there. It was the end of RimPack so there were still quite a few warships from around the world in the Harbor (Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada)

The USS Regan was in port for RimPack

We also spent more time than my wife would like touring the USS Missouri which has quite a bit of space open to explore. Afterwards we went to the Aloha Stadium for their giant swap meet. $1 pp to get in but there were all kinds of stalls selling everything from souvenirs to home supplies at very reasonable prices. We got the vast majority of our souvenir shopping done here. I will say I was a bit surprised how geared towards the Japanese tourist Honolulu was. Their tour buses were everywhere. It wasn't uncommon for us to have a ‘Scenic Point’ mostly to ourselves before 3 giant tour buses show up and we are suddenly swamped with Japanese tourists. The oddest thing was that aside from Honolulu and the scenic stops around Oahu we didn’t really see them anywhere else. They really never went far from the city or their tour bus. It wasn't a bad thing just not something we had expected. On the positive side I love sushi so there were plenty of places to choose from near our hotel. Actually I love seafood in general so its always nice to go someplace with more good seafood variety than the cod cod and more cod we get in Michigan

The rest of the time we spent driving around the island especially the much more scenic North Shore area including Turtle Beach

Much more scenic than Honolulu and we really enjoyed the Haleiwa area.

Overall we had a great time and can see why people keep going back. Already my wife was asking ‘So when are we going back’. Still it’s a bit of a hike from Michigan and it was a lot of work to piece together an itinerary that didn’t cost much to fly and stay there so it might be a few years. (The total for flights, baggage, change fees and hotel stays was $760. $260 of that were change and baggage fees). If we do go back we’d likely skip Oahu and go to The Big Island or Kauai and head back to Maui.

i loved maui when i went there. i personally thought molokini was better than any snorkeling i did in barbados. the snorkeling in general in hawaii was better than barbados to me, but a pretty large amount. i went to molokini in 2008 though and have heard that it's not as nice as it used to be due to how many trips go there and stuff. when i went there, we were the first boat there so it wasn't too crowded. but the water was so clear. i'm also not sure what you meant by you weren't as close to the marine life there as you were in barbados. you can get as close as you want to marine life anywhere.

also loved hiking up to see the falls after the road to hana - definitely one of the highlights of my trip. did you have a lot of running water up there? when we were there we had a lot and we saw some locals that said sometimes it isn't really running at all.

A total of only $760? How did you manage that?

A combination of points\miles from work travel and credit card sign ups:
I have the companion pass so my wife flies free with me on Southwest. I got tickets to San Jose for me using points and so we only had to pay the TSA fee for her. I used BA Avios points to get from San Jose to Honolulu. I paid $110 in change fees to British Airways when I changed my flight from Sunday to Tuesday when award availability showed up since that worked out significantly better with our schedule. Island Air RT from HNL to Maui was $125 PP. Used American Airlines points for 2 first class tickets from HNL to DTW. The Fairmont was covered using the free night certs (and $300 in free food\beverage certs) from their credit card. The Doubletree was booked using Hilton points.

Glad everything worked out and Maui is truly amazing!

It certainly is

Interesting. We were the first boat there (got up at 5:15am) but I still got kicked three by people not paying attention in their mad scramble to see fish and turtles.

The water by the turtles was deeper than where we were in Barbados and the turtles were on the bottom at Molokini. When one did surface it was a made scramble as all 48 paddled furiously to see it surface for 10 seconds before heading back to the bottom.

In Barbados there were only 12 other swimmers and 4 turtles were swimming around so it was very relaxed. I don't know if it was just timing or they were less agitated by lower numbers of tourists but they were just swimming all around us instead of just sitting on the bottom. One seemed to like me or something and I spent a good 10 minutes less than 2 feet from one of them. Here's the picture of my friend:

Scuba diving was definatley a better experience since the turtles we saw there were swimming around. It was just the 4 of us which is what leads me to think it has to do with the crowds of people

did you have a lot of running water up there? when we were there we had a lot and we saw some locals that said sometimes it isn't really running at all.

It had rained 3 days before (and rained later that afternoon) so fortunately we had a fair bit of water running.

Where the girls in bikinis pics? Or girls sans bikinis?

Yeah, I'm jelly.

I debated risking a picture but my wife was right next to me. We were already tired, hot and sweaty so that was an explosive situation to begin with

The Fairmont Kea Lani is pretty awesome, one of my favorite hotels in the islands.

I love Maui. Been there 3 summers out of the past 4. We tend to go cheap, stay at a condo in Lahaina that is not on the beach, but I find that to be just fine in Maui. The beach is just another perk there. So many other things to do on this island relative to your normal 'beach trip' type vacation. It's also a huge plus being able to walk to Front Street in 5 minutes.

Anyway, the Road to Hana is fantastic. But only if you get going early in the morning. I love being the first one up the Pipiwai trail or taking a swim in the 'sacred' pools.

my friend was just in maui for his honey moon after he got married on july 12th, and he was telling me when he went to hana the sacred pools were closed, so he didn't even get to take a dip in them. he said there was a storm the whole time he was on maui (4 days i think, spent 3 on the big island, and 3 on another one) and they hiked up to the falls in the rain too and that the trail was all muddy. sounds like he was there at the worst possible time :(

Ah man that sucks. We must have just missed it. We flew back home on July 9th and if I recall we were up in the Hana area on July 7th. I don't think it rained a drop the entire 1.5 weeks we were there.

The wife and I have been wanting to go to Maui. Been to Oahu, which was nice but too touristy. Other than the Road to Hana and all the activities involving the ocean, what other notable things are there to do/see in Maui? Also, is November a good or bad time to go there?

Sunrise on mount whatever it's called is really cool. Definitely recommend it but dress warm.

Very true. There was so much to keep us busy we didn't have a chance to do a lot of lounging around on the beach

I'm not saying it was an amazing experience but me and the missus went hiking into some dead lava tubes with a tour guide the one time we were on the big island. Thought it was pretty cool. Sadly we didn't bring an infrared capable camera. That would have been cool to take in the dark.

I got my first speeding ticket in Hawaii too. Damn speed limits are about 30 miles less than I'm used to driving in the northeast USA. Although with some of those roads, you're going into the ocean and not a ditch if you make a mistake.

They have a winery if you're into that. They make a couple of pineapple wines that are actually quite good. The pineapple is much more subtle than we expected. They have a more traditional white and red blend as well. Its in the middle of a cattle\elk ranch so there is a good place to get reasonably priced burgers\meat across the road.

Lots of hiking trails to various waterfalls, beaches, volcano craters. Saw plenty of golf courses too. Various cool little towns full of local shops and restaraunts

Certainly nicer than the Doubletree :D

Better than the dump that is the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani. Stay away....far far away.

Having been to Oahu several times and seen the sights I don't really have a yearning to ever go back. Way too many people for it to be relaxing. Splitting future vacations between Maui and Kauai.

We did find the nude beach in Makena last visit to Maui.
