Can someone tell me the exact steps to get onboard sound working? I have not had any luck even after downloading current bios and drivers from asus. I just built this machine. I originally installed a SB Live card that I canibalized from my p3 system, but I yanked that and uninstalled the software and drivers. Also, the SoundMAX suite is what came with the asus disk, is that what is supposed to be running my sound? Ah, I've had a rough day building this sytem; it was my first, and I am getting pretty frustrated. Thanks for any help you can offer.

System specs:
P4 2.8
Asus P4C800 Delux (obviously)
Mushkin 3500 lvl2 (2x256mb)
37GB WD Raptor
Gainward 5900 128mb nu

Thanks,
Ryan

Edit: Crap, meant to post this in the ASUS P4C800D forum sticky; told you it was a rough day.

Yes all the sound software for drivers etc will be supplied on the Asus CD that comes with the board, reading the manual as already stated will tell you this ;),yep make sure onboard sound is enabled in BIOS as well, normally the software installation guide for drivers etc is at the back of the manual.

AC 97 sound is set to "auto" in the bios. The device manager is listing SoundMAX as the default sound device, and all drivers are installed; so basically the system is telling me everything is fine. DXDIAG also reconfirms the same thing; but running sound tests produces no sound from my speakers. I have connected and reconnected all the speakers multiple times. I have a set of Boston Acustic 735 (or something like that, it is one base speaker with two smaller side speakers). Not sure where to go from here.

Also, it appears that the sound blaster files have not been removed from my machine completely. However, they don't show up in the add/remove programs list. And when I try to delete them manually I get a windows warning that it can't because they may be in use. Not sure if any of this is causing my sound problem, but I wouldn't rule it out I guess.

I have sound issues in my asus a7n8x but its a digital problem. I cant get sound from my speakers (boston accoustics) but I can from my analog headphones.

Sounds like old SB Live drivers are causing the problem, only real way to remove all possible files from Creative is reformat and clean install of OS,you could try looking in the registry for those Creative files but you do need to know what you are doing,my advice would be a clean install of OS,with XP it does not take long, backup all your important data if you`ve not done so already before you do a clean install..

That's what I was afraid of; but it's a new HD too, so there really isn't anything but windows and all the updates currently. I'll just reformat and reinstall and see what that gets me. I don't want to mess in the registry; cause honestly, I really don't know what I am looking for.

Thanks for the help, I'll let you know if that solves it or not.

Actually, that is the best advice you have gotten and I'm glad you decided to heed it.
