having trouble with onboard audio

I'm currently using 10$ a sb live! at the moment but it cannot handle running my game of choice and ventrillo at the same time, however only reason why I used it in the first place was because i was unable to get my onboard sound to work, heres the specs

ASUS NF-7 2.0s w/ nforce onboard sound, this board is only 1 year old and I have heard good things about nforce. I have reinstalled winxp fresh, and installed the latest nforce drivers from nvidia.com, no sound. My comp shows sound is playing but I cannot hear it when I connect my headphones to the motherboard.


there are no conflicts under device manager either and onboard sound is enabled in the bios. I have headphones in the right jacks, testing them all anyways. Nothing is muted, the Nforce Audio is being used as the default device.

I believe I have on set something up correctly because it should work, any help is appreciated. I would like to save some money instead of resorting to buying a brand new sound card, ty for your time.

look in your motherboard manual, does your board have a header for front panel audio? It should look like a set of pins, in two rows, 9 total, sorta like:

o o o o o


but if you're not outputting audio to the front of your case, then you need to disable this function with a couple of jumpers, across pins 5-6 and 9-10 (marked as x below):

My intention was to connect it to front audio, I believe I found the problem cause this is what happened.

When I first got my computer (first sytem ever built), I must have connected the header pins wrong cause I noticed a bit of smoke, and now a small diode is burned, I was so afraid I broke my mb but I suppose I damaged the sound.

I have the jumpers back in place at 5-6 9-10 as the manual says, but since that diode is burned, I'm thinking that it is still reading as if it's connected to the front.

That was my only mistake when I made the machine, unless theres a way to fix that looks like I will be getting a new sound card sometime soon. I was looking at this btw, if anyone knows a better deal let me know

I would go with the oem vesion without the games for $70.00
