Having trouble with my router

I use a netgear mr314 wireless router connected to a cable modem


Problem: Sometimes in the middle of surfing the net all internet functions just stop, web pages wont load, kazaa wont load, instant messenger wont sign on, cant check email, etc...

this problem doesnt fix itself until i restart my computer. Lately i started thinking my router was the cause of the problem, so i disconnected the router and directly connected the cable modem to my comptuer and in 2 weeks of using it this way have not had the problem once, which otherwise occurs daily.

So clearly my router is the cause of this problem. Now even though it is a wireless router, i am connected via cat5 cable since the router is right next to my particular machine so there is no sense for me to connect it via wireless.


i want to know if there is anything ican do to correct this problem...i called netgear and got disconnected the first time and put on hold for 40 minutes the 2nd time so im a little fed up with them right now so i was hoping someone here could help me

You may want to try and upgrade the firmware of the router. It's a fairly painless procedure.
Download the latest firmware for your model from Netgears site
Log into your router and go to .........damn I forget what it is named, but it will clearly say upgrade, then direct it to the file (unzip it forst if it came zipped) sit back, then reset the router to defaults. Viola.

If you have no luck w/ the tech support - you might want to see if you settings are configured correctly. You might have DHCP running on the router but have your comp specifying its own ip that it wants to use. Or vice versa. If restarting your comp resolved the issue before AND/OR disconnecting the power cord and reconnecting the router works to resolve the issue - it's definitely a settings issue between your router / comp. But what I mentioned above about the DHCP would be my first guess.
