Having trouble installing memory

OK, I tried to install memory on my friends computer but it just gives me problems. He has 512MB, and bought another 512MB stick. Separately both of the memory sticks work, but when he tries to install them together it just gives problems. The computer power light just blinks repeatedly, and makes a beeping noise. They are different memory types but I figure that wouldn't matter and it would just run at the slowest speed. Can anyone offer some insight on this.

Some motherboards and chipsets can be picky about what type and rating of memory they can work with and whether you can "mix and match". If possible, run matched sticks of either his original 512 stick or the "upgrade" stick.

What motherboard? Can you change memory settings in bios? If you can slow them down first. Then add the other stick.

It is in a compaq board. I figure it should at least accept it and run at the slowest speed. O well.

I mean it is a compaq computer, and I'm not exactly sure what the motherboard model is.

I figure it should be. It's about a year old. I think it's a Celeron 2.6. It has two slots, and 1 slot can hold 512mb of memory. I think the motherboard absolutely sucks. Just the whole way it's done. It has no agp slot, lots of integrated stuff that doesn't work properly.

I've run a PC2100 with a PC2700 stick in an Asus A7N8X before with no problems... It's just runs at the slower 266MHz speed of the PC2100. However, since the graphics chip is an integrated solution (shared memory) it could be the cause of the problem.
