having trouble getting a Linksys BEFSR41 working with a D-Link 614+

What I ultimately want to do is put computers connected to both routers on the same network. Ideally, I should be able to convert one of them into a switch (by disabling it as a dhcp server).

Right now, the Linksys is right next to the dsl modem and the D-Link is closer to the two bedrooms that have the wireless network cards (so moving the routers isn't really an option). Currently, the configuration is ..

DSL Modem ==> Linksys ==> D-Link ==> Another hub downstairs that works perfectly fine

The problem is that both routers are leasing ip addresses. I wanted to just use the D-Link as a switch. But when I just disable its dhcp service, none of the computers connected to it are connected to it anymore (I ping and get timeouts). I remedy this my just reseting the D-Link.

I think I'm just missing a step here. The D-Link is set to retrieving a dynamic ip (which is getting assigned by the Linksys). Primary and secondary DNS addresses are both 0.0.0.0 right now. I'm thinking maybe I have give it discrete addresses in addition to what I'm doing? So that the computers connected to the D-Link can connect to the Linksys? I'm not sure what I'm missing here, or if I'm doing the wrong thing here.

Please advise. Thanks a lot.

Bless,
Jason

Keep the 614+ DHCP disabled, but plug the BEFSR41 into a LAN port on the 614+, not the WAN port, and see if that works any better for you...

i have the EXACT same 2 routers as you and this is what you do.

DSL Modem --> BEFSR41 --> DLink 614+ with DHCP off, DHCP computers set to 151-253, and a cable from the Linksys's Uplink port to the Port 1 on the DLink, NOT THE WAN PORT.

you should be all set after that, it's pretty simple

I have the same Linksys router and I was worried about gettng a wireless router instead of an access point and keeping my linksys router which I love.

So if I disable the DHCP, this should work? Will this basically turn my new wireless router into a sort of access point?

Any suggestions on an inexpesive wireless router that doesnt require me to wait for ever for a rebate. I hate those

Yes. Just connect two LAN ports on the routers with a crossover cable or connect a LAN port on the wireless router to an uplink port on the wired router. If you disable the DHCP capability of the wireless router, it will act like a switch/wireless AP.
