Having trouble deciding of either: LumenLabs DIY Projector design, or diyprojectorcompany's design...

If ever I do the DIY projector, ill be using the lumenlab version probably, its the best I saw so far, and ill probably buy all the parts from their store, and get a 15" LCD at a local store, I could get some for less than 100$....

The infocus seems pretty cool too, but its only 800x600.... so im stuck...

Advantages of infocus:
-Smaller

Disadvantages:
-Not as good of a picture ?? (can someone confirm this?)
-more expensive (bulbs AND buy cost)

If you feel capable of DIY it, then go for it.

What is the projector gonna be used for though?
I would recommend an XGA (1024*768) for a computer use.

Well, ima use it for everything! movies on comp, games on comp, XboX, etc etc

the DIY from lumenlabs == xga

rainbow effect == when the image shifting is too slow, and you see the colors change? or soemthing like that?

never heard of that, but, I hate bad quality TV and can see the diff right away, pisses me off!

I recently got a projector, and after seeing an X1/A and X2, compared to a 4805, there was no hesitation for me to go with the 4805. I dont regret it yet, best HT investment I have made so far!

I got my 4805 for $999 with a 76" screen, but that was quite the deal. I love it though. It's incredible.

Rainbow effect is caused by the color wheel in front of the DLP. The faster the color wheel spins, the less of an issue it is. Basically it's that light on the screen (white for example) is made up of sequential flashing colors that your eye sees as white. If you move your eyes around quickly from one portion of the screen to another, or shake your head around, you'll see the colors separate and you'll see anything that's bright against a dark background have little trails that are the primary colors of light (green, blue, red).

I hope I explained that alright. If you want to see more about what I'm talking about, DLP.com has a nice little video about how DLPs like the X1 work.

I'd like to add some advantages to a comercial projector being keystone correction (so you don't have to have the projector exactly centered vertically), remote control, brightness/contrast/aspect ratio/etc. controls built in.

Yea, and it seems some of people are seeing it with the X1 because of the slower color wheel. Some see it, some don't. I personally do not see it, but everyone is different.

Thanks for all the replies, slowly being pushed to the DIY, i dont really need keystone correction etc, I probably wont be putting it any bigger then 50" right now (simply cause I dont have the space ) but will be puttin it bigger later on...

I thought about DIY for about a day and then decided I didn't want to risk screwing it up and it the benefits of a real projector outweighed the costs.

About the image size - I'm sitting about 9' away from a 76" screen from my 4805 that's about 10' away from my wall. I had some friends come over and we looked at the different levels of zoom and we all thought the 76" fully zoomed image was still excellent and the bigger image was worth the slightly degraded quality from sitting so close.

diyprojectorcompany has some pretty small boxes using a mirror, but the lumenlabs looks pretty good too, except its bigger...

If you can afford it, go with a quality machine by a known manufacturer. I got the Panny AE500 last year and haven't looked back. 125 glorious inches from 15 feet

Well, if you can get something similar for less then a quarter of the price, why not go DIY?
