Having trouble accessing internet

I'm trying to setup a computer for my brother in law and can't get the thing to access the internet. I've got 3 computers on my network, 2 with XP Pro and 1 with w98SE. Netgear router, cat 5 to main computer, cat 5 to a linksys switch, then to the other 2 computers. I disconnected one computer and set the Dell there to set it up. I've tried 2 different nic's, different pci slots, upgraded w98 to SE. I can see the other computers on the network and transfer files with no problems. I've tried IE and Netscape 7. It won't even see the router when i type in the address. I know it must be something simple i'm overlooking, but can't find it. Netscape options show direct connection to internet. I tried running the internet connection wizard but there isn't any checkbox for direct connection to internet, just dialup and lan. All settings on the Dell in Network are the same as my other w98se computer.
thanks

are you going router -> pc -> switch -> 2nd computer

or are you going router -> switch -> computers
or even router -> switch(-> 2nd computer) + pc where your router has mulitple lan ports?

and did you try using the lan check mark not directly connect to internet?

It goes router>switch>computers. I don't have directly connected to internet when i run the connection wizard, only the lan and dialup stuff. I ghosted the image and then formatted, install 98SE fresh and the nic drivers and it works great.
Now i can't get the sound drivers to install correctly. After i get them installed, during boot, the screen just goes black and sits there. I have to go into safe mode and remove the soundcard.
I can't seem to find the correct drivers on Dell's site. Think i'll disable the onboard sound and install my SB live card. AARRRGH, always something.
Thanks
