Is there a way to have my computer in another room of the house and keep my monitor, mouse, and keyboard on my desk... and have it communicate? (i know structure of that sentence sucks, so please no smart ass comments)

My computer is loud and I'm sick of it. It would be awesome if I can keep the computer in my closet and my keyboard, mouse, and monitor on my desk. Is that possible without daisy-chaining 10 wires each?

Yes it's possible.

A company called UltraSpec Cables (other probably do too) sells Keyboard mouse and Video extension cables.

They're not cheap though.

The easiest thing to do is make a hole in the wall and pass cables through it. Then you won't suffer and signal loss, especially on the VGA cable. I would definitely avoid getting any VGA cable expanders, because I tried something similar, and the quality of video/text was reduced.

Also, the easiest thing to do is buy very quiet fans - definitely a cheaper thing to do than purchasing a whole-system cable expander, cable-based or radio signal-based. Panaflo fans are very quiet and are not very expensive.. Also, if you have the tower in the other room, you'll have to run there to change the CD or the floppy =)

i just bought some panaflo 80mm's. hopefully these will do the trick. otherwise i might have to replace my HD to a barracuda IV also!

kinda frustrating because I built this computer to be reasonably quiet. it's intolerably loud right now. =(

here's what i have:
stock antec 80mm x 2 in rear
taisol hsf (the one with the copper base) with stock fan @ 5000 rpm
geforce3 ti200 with stock hsf
and one screeeeeeeeeeeeeaching maxtor diamondmax plus HD @ 7200 rpm
and one deafening DVD player (i don't mind because i don't use it much)

i bought like 10 panaflo's and i'm going to replace the two case fans and whatever else I can. maybe with some adapter on the taisol.

I agree with quieting the computer rather than moving it.

Panaflo fans will make a big difference. Put some rubber washers between the fans and the case to help further reduce vibration. I thought the stock fans on the taisol heatsinks weren't that bad, but I changed mine to a 27cfm Sunon and it is nice and quiet.

If your HDD is that noisy, you might want to just change it. I like to use WesternDigital 7200rpm drives, they work well and are practically inaudible.
