Having router problems.. :(

Ok I just got an SMC router a couple of days ago and I'm already having troubles.. here they are:

1. After like an hour of using Internet Explorer, I close it, go off and do something else, come back and no web pages load. It doesn't only happen on this computer either. The thing is, email still works just fine, it's only web pages that don't work.. something to do with DNS servers I'm assuming..

2. I can't receive email anymore. The server i'm using is 'shawmail' and it can't seem to find the server anymore through the router. I also have a different email account that uses the server 'mail.shawlink.ca' and it seems to work just fine.

3. I can't play counterstrike anymore. It's hard to get a server list and I can't connect to any servers.

4. The connection between my laptop and this computer isn't too great.. took about 4 minutes to send an mp3 over to my laptop. Checked the connection to the other computers and it's just fine.. 100Mbps... hrm

The setup goes like this: Cable modem --> SMC Router --> 8 port Kingston Switch --> 5 computers.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks so much. I'd love to get this figured out.

 
I had a very similar problem with a D-Link router, I updated the firmware and presto, it worked, maybe try that?
 
Did you configure the Router to stay connected when idle?

Did you open the ports that are used by none browser your applications?

Did you read the manual, and SMC on line FAQ?
 
Ok I think I fixed the idle problem.. doesn't seem to do that anymore. Managed to change all of the settings in apache on my linux box so I can access it.. still can't telnet to it but I can't remember what I have to change for that or where to change it. I'm still having trouble getting counterstrike to work.. someone out there must have had this problem with counterstrike and a router?

Ok I thought I had my web server all figured out.. but I don't. I'm using Vhosts and have multiple pages all being served from one IP. Each domain name points to the same IP and then the Vhosts are supposed to tell the server which pages to load according to which domain is accessed. Well this did work before when I didn't have the router but now it doesnt' seem to work at all. I have changed all of the vhost IP's etc etc.. and when I try any one of my domains, they all point to the same page. It seems like the page that is loaded is that of the first VHost... Really frustrating..

I'm assuming that there is a better way to deal with this but could I go like this:

Cable Modem --> small hub --> Web Server
--> Router --> Other computers in the house

 
here's a thought.

cable modem->webserver->router->internal network.

I don't know linux, so I don't know how you would configure the server to also act as a gateway.

I assume that you can find a way to put 2 NIC's in the webserver...
