Having problems with "tearing"(?).

I just reformatted my friend's comp, and put winXP on there. He used to have Win2K, and it worked fine.

With WinXP on there, whenever he tries to scroll or move a window, it lags. It takes a second for it to start moving, moves halfway and stops, then moves the rest and stops. It's a really weird effect.

His specs:

M7NCD Mobo
AMD Athlon XP 2500 Barton
512 Mushkin (1 stick)
40 GB Samsung
GeForce 6600GT AGP
Generic PSU (came with a crappy 60$ case)

I have no clue what's causing this. I think it's attached to another problem that he's having: his CPU is only running at 800 MHz. The mobo doesn't have multiplier support, only FSB.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Lol, 800MHZ is perfectly fine for windows XP. I had a dell dimension system with 450MHZ and it was quite speedy. Another problem could be the fact it's a no name brand board, I'm sure it has multipliers. Check in the bios for the multiplier settings.

Nope it definitely doesn't have multipliers. I've checked around and in every review I found they said that it sucks due to the fact. :-( I couldn't believe it either.

why is he only running at 800 mhz with barton 2500 and not stock?

bios update may fix the cpu reading, check the cpu temp when it has been running for hours, and check physical processor for noticable discoloration/burns/damage. if cpu temps read over 60c.... it definately needs a better heatsink or allow colder air to get into the case.

did u install the mobo chipset drivers like for VIA KT 266,a/333/400,a/600 its the 4 in 1 hyperion drivers... for nVidia nforce/nforce2/nforce2 ultra 400 its the Forceware drivers.... dunno about SiS.. but their 735 chipset with the sdram/ddr ram combo board had lousy driver support and ran only from windows drivers unless it was the sound or lan driver.

also the nvidia video drivers and set the monitor refresh rate at the optimal for your monitor like 100 or 85 hz for CRTs.

if none of those work, suggest getting a newegg refurbished nforce 2 ultra board or kt600 for ~$30 and under. check every couple days and at certain times they get new inventory. they all should detect the barton 2500 at the 11x multiplier with the 166 mhz bus effectively 333 mhz fsb even if there is no bios options or physical jumpers for multiplier.

PM me if u need further assistance 🙂

Did you install the latest video drivers? After a fresh install of windows my video always lags exactly how you described until I dl and install new drivers.

Thanks, I needed some new video drivers. Now for the CPU speed problem... I updated to the latest BIOS and still no luck.

I'm thinking about doing the wire trick (with the CPU pins) to force the multiplier to 11x. Is there any drawbacks to this?
