Having problems using DVD burner

Alright, I'm going to say it up front. I am a burning noob. I knew just enough about my old CD burner to drag stuff into it and make CD's.

Recently I bought a Samsung DVD burner with lightscribe, as I torrent occasionally and having the extra disc space is pretty much a requirement for many of the downloads out there nowadays. Unfortunately, either due to my own idiocy, or some fixable problem, I cannot seem to make DVD's consistantly. In fact, I have only successfully done so twice, out of about twenty attempts. Every failed try seems to happen during the "lead in" phase, and apparantly leaves me with a coaster, as I can't seem to get Nero to recognize the disc after this happens, so no wiping and restarting for me.

System specs:

Intel C2D E6400 @2.6 ghz
2 GB DDR2800
Samsung DVD Burner with Lightscribe
Windows XP SP2

I am including an error log from Nero, it doesn't mean anything at all to me but perhaps someone here will be able to look over it and give me something to go on. I'm hoping it's just some configuration issue that I can fix in options, but I'm worried that it's an actual drive issue. I got it from Newegg a few months ago, and hadn't really used it for anything other than reading DVD's until a week ago or so, and it reads just fine. Only problem is the write aspect.

They are Memorex's. Not a very good brand I understand, but certainly would not expect a 90% fail rate on them either. I just tried to make a backup of Oblivion and went through 5 discs which are now apparently unusable and still haven't gotten it to go past 1% w/o failing. The fact that it's always dying in the same place makes me think it's not the DVD's, but something else causing the problem.

Thought that came to mind...are your SATA ports clock locked? Your OC could be messing up data transfer if they are not. I doubt it but try setting the CPU back to stock and then burn.

Also, if you haven't, verify that you have the latest firmware(SB01)

Lastly, try different software and a different cable. If none of this works...chances are you just got unlucky with a bad drive. I wouldn't let this sway you from this drive. It really is excellent from all my usage of it.

I think the problem is with the JMicron controler:
Adapter driver: <JRAID> HA 4

This causes DMA to not be enabled for your drive. Check your BIOS settings and disable the RAID on this Parallel ATA channel. Then run Nero InfoTool and look at the "Configuration" tab if DMA is on.

As above,
And also, try CdburnerXP - free non-bloatware burner - nice and easy to use (just drag and drop).

Won't harm your system and might help us figure out the problem.

OK, Tried new cable, Nero 7.0, a return to stock speed, and checked firmware. None of this has helped the situation unfortunately. Kazani, I dug around in my Bios but was unable to find a reference to your suggestion. Could you possibly direct me to where that would be, or give me an idea where to look? Everything regarding my SATA and IDE channels seems to be configured properly from what I can see, but yours is about the last hope I have other than trying new media or buying a new drive at this point.

Montag, I tried CdburnerXP actually before I used Nero, and it was doing the same thing with it. It is either a hardware malfunction, or something is set up incorrectly somewhere, I just have to find it.

Nice one.
At least it narrows the problem down.

Can you uninstall the dvdburner in hardware dev.
Re boot, let win reinstall.
See if that does anything.
It is possible that you have got a dodgy one though - can you try it in someone else's computer?

Yeah Montag I think I'm going to have my dad bring his burner over, and take mine with him. See if I can burn on his and vice versa. I will try the windows uninstall of the device here in a few, dinner time.

Go to Device manager and in the IDE/ATAPI host controllers(select properties for each device listed) you should see option for transfer mode. This is where you can verify DMA.

Ok, I checked the DMA info in my device manager, and all of them are set to auto detection, and DMA if available. My primary IDE adapter is showing up as running in Ultra DMA Mode 5, which I assume is correct. I just deleted and reinstalled the device itself from the device manager as Montag suggested, so going to try another burn shortly. If I still can't get it to work I might try and get a different media type.

Could there be an actual issue with the file itself? I'm trying to backup a torrent that is 4.2 gigs long in a zip file. The file is not corrupt and everything works fine with it, but maybe the problem is the file itself and not the hardware?

EDIT: Tried burning a DVD after uninstalling and reinstalling the device driver, still fails at 1%. Sigh, I dont know where to go with this.

You might want to unzip it,
I presume it is a movie.

It would be easy using Nero to burn the iso file to dvd, cddburnerxp wont do this I think.

You need to disable that Jmicron RAID controller because it's messing with your DMA. Study your motherboard's manual for the corresponding BIOS setting. Also take a look at this thread:

Okay, Just figured out that the jraid controllers caused the problems, once I removed the raid configure program through add/removed programs the IDE port was re-recognized as standard atapi ports and everything works fine.

quote: Originally posted by: plouie10 Hi, Quick question, when burning 2 dvd's at once I can't get it to burn faster than 4x which completes in about 15 minutes. When I had the same two dvd burners attached to my old P4 3.0Ghz they would burn at full speed in about 7 minutes. I noticed in nero is shows the adaptor as jraid instead of atapi. Am I doing something wrong? Because there is only one IDE controller I have one set up as master and one as slave, this never posed a problem before. Hope someone can shed some light on this. Thanks

Also don't trust the device manager for DMA listings, use the Nero infotool. If you can, post a screenshot of the "Configuration" tab. (A nice screenshot program is MWSnap)

Until you have resolved the issue I suggest you use a DVD-RW disk for testing, to avoid wasting coasters.

I wish I'd have thought of this many moons ago! I don't even have any of the RWs.

I'm using RW discs. The problem is after it fails the burn, the discs are apparantly unusable. For instance, if I have one of the failed discs in my drive while I reboot, windows will hang on load until I remove it from the DVD drive. If I insert one of the failed discs while using Nero, Nero hangs until I remove the disc. Same for the My Computer folder, I can't do anything with Windows until I take the disc back out. I think its because of autoplay trying to play a disc maybe, and recognizing that there's a disc in the drive, but the disc has no start/stop information so it just sits there reading it forever until it's removed. The drive activity light will be on constantly while one of the bad discs is in the drive. Anyone know how I can recover those discs, I'd appreciate it.

There are files size limitations. Fat32, for example, only supports file size up to 4 GB. That file you are trying to burn is 4.2 GB. The filesystem uses on DVD's might not support files that size. there's a good chance this has something to do with this issue. But check out what some have said about jraid too.

I use Alcohol 120% to erase those disks, using the "Ignore illegal TOC (always erase)" option.
