Having problems toilet-training my cat...help?

I've read on a few posters saying they have toilet trained their cats, so i'm hoping this reaches on of them. I've been attempting to train them for about 5 weeks now, using a method that is supposed to take 3. They were fine when I raised their box to toilet height, and they use the box when a spare toilet seat is attached to it, but they insist on squeezing inside the hole, they wont balance themselves on the edges of the seat. I've tried putting sticky tape face-up across it, but at that point they refuse to use it as all and either hold their bladder/bowels until I remove it or they go on the floor (or in their food dish, oddly enough).

what am I doing wrong here and what other methods could I employ to get them to balance on the edge of the seat instead of trying to fit inside it? (which obviously is important if they are to go without a box and on a real toilet).

Join the club. My cat is two years old, and has been trained that whole time, but since I moved into my new home, he pisses where ever he pleases, right in front of me, even though he knows the consequences, and there are consequences.

The point is, there is no dumb animal. Just dumb masters that don't know how to properly train them.

It wasn't advice... it was humor. But your 'logic' is a bit slow it seems.

Sure... let's use that logic then... I'll bet it took your parents about 18 months to toilet train you!

You need to understand that 50 percent of posts are serious, 50 percent sarcastic, 50 percent are just having fun, and 50 percent are intent on being weenies because they think you or your topic sucks. Expect to get all four types of posters.

How big is your cat? Is it still a kitten? It shouldn't be going into the bowl. Are you slowly reducing the litter too?

EDIT: you actually have to show your cat the proper posture it seems... if all 4 of his legs are in the bowl, you'll need to place the two front legs on the seat.

About 10 days ago I had them down to a cupfull of completely unscented litter using the spare toilet seat on their litter box...but when I moved them to the real toilet utilizing saran wrap under the toilet seat lid for litter, they didn't take and it turned out to be disasterous; both of my cats (12 and 18 months) crapped on the floor and in their food bowl.

So I've gone back, temporarily, to the spare rim on their box. They are fairly small cats; not fat.

Their problem is that they won't balance on the edges, they squeeze all four legs inbetween the circular toilet seat. And if I try and show them they run away.

...because next you have to teach him proper squatting posture. Catch him beginning to use the toilet as much of the time as possible and show him where his feet are supposed to go. Just lift them right out of the bowl and place them on the seat (front legs in the middle, hind legs on the outside). If he starts out with three or, heaven forbid, all four feet in the bowl, just get the front two feet out first. Praise him all over the place every time he completes the activity in this position.
