ok guys, running latest version of mIRC and i cannot recieve any files thru it no matter what server i am on. I think my firewall is causing it, what ports do i need to open for me to be able to recieve stuff and it still be secure. also, what setting should i set my options on to be secure, yet able to recieve files easily. thanks

First off, a lot of chanels/networks require you to have ident/auth running
so open port 113 to ur pc. To test this, you can do a whois on yourself, if the first character u see is a ~ identd isnt working, otherwise it is. THIS IS NOT A REQUIREMENT FOR DCC, IT IS SOMETHING THAT A LOT OF NETWORK REQUIRE TO CONNECT

DCC needs no ports open by default. You only need to open ports if you are DCCing out. In the case that you are doing that, mirc runs on port 1024 - 5000 by default .... Theres no need for that. Only one port is needed per concurrent DCC send. IE Open like ports 5000 - 5010.
Set in: View -> Options -> Connect -> Options -> Advanced

Also, Mirc DCC does ignore most xfers by default. Theis is because people exploit the hell out of newbs. To enable dcc get (or technically disable dcc ignore) set method to disabled, and UNCHECK THE TURN IGNORE BACK ON IN 3 MINUTES BOX. You can of course set ignore only or accept only filters, but the long and short of it is a virus scanner and some intelligence will keep you away from any trouble.
Set in: View -> Options -> DCC -> Ignore

And I don't know how familiar you are with IRC, but heres the deal. Never open a file that was dcc'ed to you without you asking for it. Never do any of the processes that involce the /decode commmand .... they are always an exploit of some nature. People can basically encode malicous lines of commands/code to look like gibberish and when you decode it, it is then executed.

What is your Operation System?

If your DCC window appears but the download doesn't pass 0, then it may be a permitions issue.

You may check if you're running for example a Win 2000 OS, and if your user has write permitions on the download folder.

ignore is disabled

it pops up a box asking if i want to accept, which i do, and then it never goes past zero and then gives me connection failed

Change it to auto accept... then download a program called dccassist and load it. Its an mirc script that allows dcc transfers. I have a firewall running as well and with that script I am able to get most files. I auto accept anything because my antivirus scans everything coming in. I have never gotten a virus of mirc.

What kind of firewall are you using? I know Sygate Personal Firewall Pro detected mIrc activity as port scanning on my PC . You can usually go in and set an advanced rule allowing all traffic to and from a specific program. That and disable "block attackers IP".

I use mirc fairly often and I do not run a firewall, but some servers seem to always give me the same problem. Other servers work fine. Have you ever been able to receive files thru mirc, or is this a new problem. Doesn't seem like a Firewall issue to me, more likely an options setup problem, or u just need to keep trying different servers.

Also, why don't people freak out here in these forums if u mention downloading from IRC. You mention Kazaa and u get several replies about how you're going to prison or some other stupid crap.

Generally when downloading through Kazaa is mentioned here it pertains to "uncapping" connections. Admins don't like to help people screw other admins ;)

found the issue, it was ports, i opened the wrong ones on the router, i did not know that you had to open ports for incoming files
