Having my wisdom tooth taken out today.

Missed work last week due to tooth pain and went to the dentist. Apparently it was infected. So I had it cleaned, and he recommended I get my tooth removed. Unfortunately I will be awake for this procedure. I've had teeth removed before, and it wasn't that bad, at least from what I recall (for braces, and I was pretty young then). Oh, the tooth that's going to be removed is perpendicular to the next one. I heard that makes it more difficult to remove. Lucky me!

Edit: I also reserved tomorrow for a PTO. Is the pain going to be bad enough, that I won't want to go to work? I'm having the procedure done at 5pm.

well they should knock you out before the procedure, and load you up with strong pain meds when it is through.

this should make things a little more bearable.

I need to get mine removed too.. I've just been putting it off for about two years. Every 4-6 months they'll start to hurt (no room for them) and I'll just take Advil like candy for a week or two, then it'll stop.

Yea, they started hurting last year but I thought it would just come and go. But this time, it hurt so bad I couldn't sleep. I took Advil, Tylenol, and prescription pain killer and it still hurt. I took so many that I felt sick the whole night and next morning. Not cool. When I went to the dentist, he said the pain was from the infection. After he cleaned it, it did feel a lot better. You should probably get it checked out.

it is perpendicular? you should have had it extracted BEFORE it started to hurt.

I would get the gas, but I never thought I would need dental insurance, so I never got it. Now I can't get it until the next sign-up period, which is late this year. I pretty much don't want to fork over more dough than neccessary.

you'll do fine with just novacaine (lidocaine actually). you won't feel a thing.

Yea, both sides of my lower jaw seem to have a perpendicular tooth growing. I'm only having one removed though. My dentist said I could be conservative and wait and see if the other one starts hurting, since the gum is still healthy and as long as I keep it clean, I should be ok.

man its not so bad at all... i had all 4 taken out last summer and all i got was a stupid basic freezing... no fun gas... :| and i didnt even get tylenol3's for after...

either way, take all the drugs u can get cause they will be fun for later (t3s) and if u can get the gas go for it! 😛

yeh, well..... if the other one is just like this one you can bet it will get infected in the future too. pretty much impossible to keep a perpendicular tooth clean.

That's just great. I guess I'll see how this one goes and then make plans sometime down the line to take the other one out.

edit: I'll wait until I get dental insurance to take the next one out.

It's very strange but I have two wisdom teeth (left/top & bottom) that the dentist told me I needed out when I was 21. Well I'm 31 now & have had no problems with them. I asked my new dentist about them last year & he said as long as I brush real good and floss them, they may not have to be removed.

Am I in the clear after 10 years or is it still possible for them to grow out more and in turn, have to have them removed?

I don't know for sure but from what my dentist said, as long as you keep them clean you should be ok. It's when the gum gets unhealthy and loose, you start to have problems. I've begun flossing everywhere like mad now so that I hopefully won't have this problem in the future.

I had all 4 of mine taken out 4 years back, and it wasn't painful, and the whole procedure took about 15 minutes. It will be easy if they are ready to be pulled and they don't have to cut them out.

They prescribed Vicodine and I never used one of them for pain. The only thing I didn't like about the whole procedure is your mouth constantly being filled with blood from the bleeding. Eventually it stops but it really sucks. I used the gas and it was fine, did not hurt at all.

I can't even imagine how much it may hurt. The throbbing pain from last week was already unbearable. I hope he prescribes me something strong, unlike the 600mg of stuff he prescribed me last week.

Make sure they give you percoset for at home pain management and not vicodin or tylenol with codene. Everyone I have known who has taken the latter two has been in agony because of its lack of effectiveness. A few percoset 5-325mg pills should be fine, but depending on weight and pain tolerance they may give you more or less

all 4 of mine plus a wild extra k9 will be removed next month.
this thread calmed me down and scared me again all at the same time.

woot-

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out at the same time, 2 days before Turkey Day!

It was great. The dentist gave me an IV that was like drinking 12 martinis, all at the same time. I only remember the last tooth coming out, I was pretty blacked out for the other 3.

He gave me a shot in each hole to prevent them from swelling.

It took 10 minutes to get all 4 teeth out.

I went home, slept for about 2 hours, and then went out to the garage to work on my car 🙂 Just iced my cheeks a little after I got home.

By Turkey Day I could eat somewhat normally, just cautiously.

Ah, it's not that bad. Lots of good drugs involved usually.

Enjoy squirting water into the hole to get all of the food chunks out. Great fun.
