Having issues with my PC...please help

I put together a new computer...AMD XP1800, 512RAM, 50GB HD, ATI All In Wonder, Soundblaster, and other misc drives. Problem is, everything is so slowwwwwwww...whether it's emptying the trash, capturing video, playing an animated GIF, clicking on an icon, switching between apps...everything seems to stick. This really sucks because I was expecting a really quick computer and instead the crappy PCs at my school seem to perform better. Any insights? The chipset I bought had 512MB of "value ram"...is this some assy ram? Could it be the video card? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm really frustrated. I also just installed a fresh copy of Win2K to see if that would help, but it didn't...still sticks and is really slow.

Thank you 🙂

1. Make sure your CPU is psoting at the proper speed. Sometimes the new XP's will not get auto detected without a bios update.

2. Run all the windows updates. There maybe a VIA update for your motherboard in these that fixes a lot of issues also.

3. Check for any driver updates.

I think after all of that you would be ok.

I don't know why my ACPI did this, but for a while it had my video on the same IRQ as all my other peripheral's. Everything was really slow and jerky. I went and changed from APIC to PIC in my bios, for a single boot and had it Reset configuration data. It moved the video card and I switched back to APIC and all is well now. I am kind of bummed that I don't have a choice now to switch ACPI off.
