Having big problems installing a new slave HD...

I just installed my new 80 GB Western Digital HD and some weird things have been going on.
Right when I powered on, the HD started making a loud clicking noise...and hasn't stopped.

Also, I'm trying to install the drive as a slave, yet for some reason when I have the drive plugged into the IDE cable, my computer can't boot up Win2K and just freezes. When I unplug the new slave, everything's fine.

Anybody have a clue what's going on? Or do I have a faulty drive?
Thanks.

Sounds like you have a bad drive... I think your only option is to replace it.

Did you set the jumpers on the new drive to slave? If the jumpers on both drives are set to master, it will hang the system at startup.

www.zazzle.com
first let me say that out of about 10 hard drives i have sent in for exchange 6 have been western dig.
the rest were all other brands, so i avoid them.
also what are you slaving to? i have had weirdness when slaving to ata100 drives.
however the clicking i have seen in wd drives and tells me it's dead
try it as master and see if you can format it

Yah, the jumpers on the new drive are set to slave. My comp recognizes the drive, and knows it's a slave but there are still problems. I tried installing Win2K on it just to see what would happen, and I got an error message and couldn't finish installing.

Damn, I didn't want to return this...it's already past the 30day return day of the store. Anyone know how Western Digital's support is regarding returned drives?

Clicking is normally the sound of the platters/heads smacking into each other. But...

...Make sure your Master disk is set to Master, NOT Cable Select. Make the 2nd drive slave. Verify these settings, as they could be causing the system hangs.

Otherwise, it sounds like a bad drive. One way to get around the 30-day return period is to buy another identical drive, and then afterwards, go return the 1st one with the latest receipt and tell the store you are returning it because it is defective. It's not exactly ethical per se, but if the drive has been totally unused and you just left it in the box for the 30 days, you aren't returning a used drive as new. You are juggling the dates. Technically, though, this would probably be fraudulent, so what you do is up to you. You may also want to just return it to the store anyway and advise that you bought it as a gift and now have to return it. similar to the Christmas season and the way they accept returns, you may find the store will help you out. Especially if it is a reputable B&M such as Sears or whatever.

Yah, but they'd just exchange it for a new one...so I'd be stuck with 2 drives. :)
Good plan though!

Have you tried putting the new drive on the second channel and setting it to slave? Your problem is probably a physical problem with the drive, but it would be good to rule out any master/slave problems.

If you determine the drive to be bad, just call WD. They will walk you though some stuff and have you run diagnostics, then when they figure out the drive is screwed they will give you an RMA # and an address to send it to. Unfortunately, it usually takes about 2 weeks to get the drive back from them.
