Having a Phone and Tablet with different OS's

I have an iPhone 4, and am very tempted to get the Galaxy Tab 10.1 at Staples for $399 with the $100 off coupon, but have a couple reservations....

If I was to buy an iPad 2 instead, would I be able to download tablet-supported versions of the apps I already purchased on my iPhone for no additional charge? Also, is there any nifty iPhone-to-iPad functionality already available or coming out in iOS5 that I'd be missing out on?

I'm by no means "bought-in" to Apple or any other manufacturer or OS, but since I do have an iPhone and an AppleTV 2nd gen, I figured I'd check before getting an Android tablet. The Samsung DOES have a very sexy screen, and I'd like to dink around with another OS and its apps, but I want to know what I'd be missing out on if I didn't make my gadgets part of an assimilated collective. If the Galaxy Tab's UI was as smooth as the iPad 2, I'd have bought it already :|

I used to have an iPhone, and when I got an iPad ALL of the applications that I had purchased automatically downloaded and installed themselves when I logged in the first time. Even the stupid ones that I forgot that I downloaded

Some of the applications automatically scale to the iPad's larger screen, but you certainly don't get a free or even a discounted upgrade to the "HD" versions of the apps though.

If you want free apps, though, you really need to try the Amazon Appstore for Android. They always have something cool available for free every day.

Well, I have an iPhone 3GS, and then bought a Nook Color and rooted it to CM7. I have to say, I was not too happy with it, and in fact I'm selling the Nook on Ebay right now (for about what I paid, which is good). I found the OS to be annoying, compared to my phone. The Web browser was not great, IMO. It did play angry birds quite nicely.

I might be being unfair, since I was running an OS that the Nook was not originally designed for. Also, my Nook is running a phone-based OS, and not Honeycomb, which is designed for Tablets. In the end, I decided that an iPad would be a better investment (especially a Jailbroken one), especially when it's the same price or better than the better Android tablets.

I have a Motorola Atrix as my main phone and an iPad 2 as my tablet. The only thing I kind of wish I could do was sync my books onto my Atrix that I bought in iBooks. Also the Apps that I buy on iPad can't be used on the Atrix and vice versa.

I don't know if you can for every app, as some have different iPad/iPhone versions, but I know that for Apple's own apps you can get the iPad version for free if you've purchased it for your iPhone. Otherwise it's probably on a per app basis depending on what the developers want to do.

All the staples within a 20 mile radius of me have sold all of their tablets except the PlayBooks, and the SGT is sold out online, so you can't do the kiosk order method.
