WARNING: LONG-WINDED NARCISSISM FOLLOWS:
I've been wishing for a while that I could really sink my teeth into a game I haven't played before.
Rare indeed are the games like Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us which come along and command my full attention until their single player campaign is finished.
I expect to be revisiting a lot of games and enjoying a lot of stuff greatly when I get an Oculus, whenever the consumer version actually comes out...
but in the meantime, I'm trying to find something which will really grab me.
I've been sort of aimlessly playing some Age of Empires II HD while watching YouTube videos, sometimes I like to play something mindless with no story so I can also absorb a video. I'll watch something like 48 Hours or Dateline etc. My go to game for that had usually been CS:GO but it started rebooting my PC.
I guess technically I may be looking for another go to game like that, something to replace CS:GO because I don't feel like wrangling with why it's rebooting my PC right now... I was thinking maybe Battlefield 3 could function in this role, but nothing Origin related is working for me at the moment (I expect this to resolve as the bundle novelty wears down)
but more importantly I'm trying to find something with a strong single player experience which will absorb me. I have a crap ton of unplayed games and I'm going to list some and if anyone's played some of them and can help tip the balance toward a certain game with an endorsement... I'd appreciate it:
Alan Wake
Bully: Scholarship Edition
GTA IV
Metro 2033 (with the intention of laying the groundwork for Last Light)
Sleeping Dogs
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
God of War III (never played any of this series)
Heavy Rain
Mass Effect series (have had trouble sticking with these)
Uncharted series (have had trouble getting into these, particularly 1, 2 I haven't given too much time yet...)
Dark Sector
Now let me list some games which have really held my attention within the last few years:
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
The Last of Us
Bioshock Infinite
Skyrim
Fallout 3 (New Vegas not so much, but kinda)
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Halo series
Tomb Raider (2013)
The Walking Dead (Tell Tale)
The odd thing is the games which don't hold my interest are sometimes things you'd really think would... like back in 1998 when I played Ocarina of Time I was absolutely glued to it. Loved it. However I still haven't finished Wind Waker or Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword. I always keep telling myself I will...
Here are some games which have not drawn me in, some of which I hope to give another try... but I'm trying to give anyone who feels like helping me with suggestions any relevant info which might help them narrow down what actually would grab me - some of these I clocked a decent amount of time in before losing interest:
L.A. Noire
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
The Darkness
Oblivion
The Witcher
Dragon Age Origins
Transformers: War for Cybertron
Hitman: Absolution (clocked a decent amount of time in this)
Zeno Clash
Shadowrun Returns
There are a lot of others... some of those are games I had a distinct feeling I would never feel compelled to finish, and others I felt like maybe I just wasn't in the right mood at the time I tried them.
Sad thing is, Witcher 2 looked good and I resolved that it was going to be the game I really made a solid effort to stick with until it grabbed me, I had heard a lot of good things. But it was crashing my PC just like CS:Go... reboots. Had to call off that plan
