Crane rips through house in Kennesaw

A crane crashed through a Kennesaw home Tuesday, its 180-foot arm slicing through the two-story house like a knife through butter.

No one was injured, but officials condemned the house on Revere Walk.

Homeowner Beverly Wolfe, a 43-year-old nurse, said the accident happened after she contacted a tree-cutting service to remove a dead white oak from her back yard.

Because it was difficult to get machinery into her yard, Wolfe said a man from the company told her a crane would be rented and used to lift parts of the tree up and over the house. "He said they'd done this for 20 years," she said.

Wolfe said she was eating dinner about 6:30 p.m. when the arm of the crane crashed through her upstairs bedroom and then her living room.

"It felt like I was watching a cartoon, it was so surreal," said neighbor Michael Wood, whose family offered Wolfe a place to stay overnight.

Today a much larger crane will lift the arm off the house, said Cobb County fire Lt. DeWayne Campbell.

Wolfe was stoic: "I lost my husband five years ago. Nothing can be as bad as that."

What got to her, though, is what the tree-cutter told her after the accident.

"The guy said to me, 'I am done with two-thirds of the job' and wanted me to pay him for that," Wolfe said. "I laughed."

Wow ... that's some balls. You just destroy somebody's home, and then have the nerve to ask them to pay for the privilege.

I would wait until he finished removing the tree before paying him, but he does deserve to be paid for the service he rendered. On the other hand, his business or the crane business better have insurance to fix the house, or tear it down and build a new one.

it's condemned, so most likely there is structural damage (duh, obviously) which means house will have to be torn down and rebuilt. My guess is he will be liable for the damages.
