Weren't there gas shortages and very high gas prices in the 70s? It's not like this is the first time ever that prices have spiked sharply, right?

Grrrr

Gas threads make me cry. 🙁

yeah, I remember reading about the gas crisis in the 70's, it all but killed off the V8 in Aussie cars.
Gas prices in my town went up today to a record au$1.379 per litre for regular unleaded an au$1.435 for premium, damn pesky government keeping our fuel price hikes inline with the US, despite the fact that Australia produces 96% of it's own oil, nothing like the great money grab.
Ahhh Australia...land of the over priced, over taxed, 3rd world quality fuel.

LMFAO😀

hmmm the way things are going it wont be too long before I will be thundering down a stretch of outback highway in my V8 falcon looking for crashed cars to get fuel out of while being chased by crazed thugs on motorcycles.
Fuel theft is already getting out of hand in my local region, with a lot of servo's refusing to turn on the fuel pumps for anybody who looks dodgy, and I know of plenty of people including myself who has had fuel stolen from their cars while they are parked in the parking lot of local supermarkets and at home.

aidanjm,

You are correct, and the idiots who fail to learn from history are calling for the SAME failed policies that made that situation so much worse.

Price controls.

It was disturbing to watch Bill O'Reilly whine about how we need government price fixing on gas. He's well old enough to remember what a disaster that was in the 70s, and more recently, during the CA power crisis. This proves, once and for all that the man is FAR from "conservative."

Agreed. I would say the same about many aspects of Bush administration policy. I called myself a republican when the party reflected MOST of my values (I always wonder about the cognitive ability of those who seem to agree with EVERY philisophical nuance fo their party).

Republican used to mean small government and fiscal responsibility. I won't mention what I think it means now as I don't care to draw down an airstrike from the freerepublic.com crowd.

Hence why I call myself a "libertarian" even though I don't agree 100% with the official Libertarian party platform. At least I agree with them FAR more than I agree with either major party.

But to be fair to the Bush admin, they have not even considered price controls and refuse to. So, at least on this issue, they are correct.

Yeah, the oil embargo in the early 70's, and then again in 1981. Hasn't happened in a while though.

this is what killed off the Ford V8 in the Falcon in 1982, it was 10 years before it returned...and now could be on the virge of dying again...

Which they have already done. To the tune of 60 Million barrels of crude oil.
