Havent been to McDonalds in a very long time. Apparently hash browns are two bucks a pop.

Yeah, you really can't get out of McDonald's for under ten bucks these days. Even Taco Bell is expensive! This is why I'm such an Instapot enthusiast...food is stupid expensive these days! Not to mention food delivery...I tried to get a $12 burger meal with fries & a drink delivered, and I couldn't get it under $25 after fees!!

Fast Food was always expensive. Gas and other factors have made beef and even starches more expensive.

I could whine about grocery store ground beef never going under 3 dollars a pound or even the food donation place giving only one roll of ground beef instead of two.

I had McDogburger's the other night for some reason .... it was expensive and disgusting plus the ordering experience was an actual PITA.

It will be at least several MORE years before I make that mistake again. :confused2:

Just two or three years ago, I discovered that a regular (tiny) burger at McDonald's without cheese was $1! This was before Dollar Tree went to $1.25, so I remember calculating that those little McDonald's burgers (without cheese) were the same price, and about the same size, as dollar store burgers (with "cheese").

Inflation happened fast!

Burgers in particular, I don't deem worthy of much money so I hardly ever buy them, but if forced to eat at McDonalds, I'd just get two or three McDoubles (and nothing else but water) and woof them down before the disappointment set in. They'd have to be fresh and hotter from cooking, wouldn't want to eat one once it has cooled under a lamp). I think they've risen to about $1.60 each here.

I been eating at home since the start of lockdown. Mostly canned soups and such. Those have gone up a lot too. You used to be able to get a complete meal for 4 dollars, and depending on the brand it was quite good.
Not so much any more.

We have stopped eating at fast food/chain establishments. In the past year, maybe 3 visits to Chick-fil-A, and 3 to 5 Guys, but neither in the last 3 - 4 months. These have probably the tastiest food of all chain/franchise food, but it is still lacking.

Instead, we often eat at local mom-and-pop restaurants, diners, and breweries. It doesn't cost that much more, the food, choices, etc., are far worth the extra $2 - 3 bucks for a meal, and the quality just blows the chain/franchise places out of the water.

Example: Local brewery/restaurant. Every Tuesday, burger and a pint of craft beer $13. This is a 1/3 pound burger with meat sourced from a local farm, (no mystery meat from who knows where) with choice of sides, and a pint of excellent craft beer from their tap list, with table service. And the money stays local, not only for the staff, business, and local suppliers.

Food trucks are also a popular choice with us. Some excellent food, and given the price, a win-win.

My local independent restaurants have also gone up a lot since the start of quarantine. The nearby irish pub used to have daily deals and steak specials and happy hour and all that shit.
Gone.

Nonsense, fast food was cheap to buy (but expensive considering long-term health consequences) prior to roughly 5 years ago. It used to be clearly cheaper than normal sit-down restaurants or even fast-casual places. Pandemic-era inflation is well known by now, but there was already some wage inflation happening before mid 2020. Especially in big cities on the West coast.

This is a bit of a contrived example but I can remember 3 decades ago in high school (yeah, I'm getting old), McDonald's had a prominent "2 for $2" campaign for Big Macs. Using an inflation calculator, cumulative inflation since 1993 is 108%. That burger for $1 would be equivalent to $2.08 today. Although that isn't available, the McDonald's mobile app often has promotional deals. BOGO Big Mac/Quarter Pounder is not uncommon in the app. So you can get 2 Big Macs for about $6 + tax. Tack on an order of large fries and you can still feed 2 people for about $10. Obesity and diabetes are free with sustained consumption. :p

Deals/coupons aside, fast food menu prices have indeed shot through the roof and don't represent good value.

I get It's cheap like a dollar store product is "cheap". Low purchase price to obtain but that's the only sense it is "cheap". My implicit point is that the amount of meaningful material received for that price is still worse than a pound of grocery store beef, the cheapest buns from said store, and the vegetables that accompany the burger. I'd be spending a premium for a fraction of a pound of grain fed beef raised in crappy conditions.

Americans shorted themselves out of the more beef in a burger because they didn't get fractions. There was a "third-pounder" by A&W but people thought they were getting less.

Prices vary big time from location to location for fast food.

The McDonalds right around my house I get my son a hamburger happy meal for $2.99. If I go to other locations it can be $4.99 - $5.49 it just depends.

The same thing goes for breakfast combos and stuff too.

I have noticed the Taco Bell near me is expensive as hell now though. My "normal" meal I get is just under $14.

If everyone used apps and coupons like us, the fast food corps would have to find a new business model. I don't mind being a cheap bastard but most consumers just pay menu prices.

It costs less to buy groceries and make your own meals at home. News at 11?

I'm not a big eater, and I find a Quarter Pounder or an In-N-Out Double Double perfectly acceptable in size/calories. I don't see a problem with the size of the beef patties. You can get a 1/3 lb "Angus Burger" at Carl's Jr/Hardee's, or from plenty of restaurants or local joints. With beef prices what they are, you'll pay accordingly.

I see such things as privacy-destroyers and not even close to worth the alleged savings. If thats the only way to get reasonable prices then I am in deep crap.

I must have had extraordinary misfortune(maybe hacked?) or security really is/was an issue, because about four years back, my debit card, which I think was saved into the app, was charged for a McDonald's purchase in The Bronx, NY. Maybe they fixed the bug now, but I had to call my debit card company(it was for my paycheck money) to reverse the charge. I don't remember exactly how I caught it right away(maybe the app or email), but I must have received notice of an order somehow because I usually didn't check that debit card account.
I even called that Bronx McDonalds.

Then I lost access to the app to make any purchase because of that reversal. Not that it really mattered as health would have stopped me eventually anyway(dental).

I remember McDonalds started getting expensive after the summer 2012 drought. Though the one that surprises me is pizza getting so much cheaper. I used to pay $10 in 1991 dollars for a large pepperoni back then, now I can go to Dominos and get a large pepperoni carryout for $8 of the same quality. That $10 in 1991 would be $22 now.

Can you order with the app and still pay with cash in the store? I hate buying stuff like that with anything but cash, something psychological about having to hand over real money. Otherwise small crap like that really builds up and wastes a lot of money.

Back when the McDonald's app first came out they used to consistently have coupons for $1 large fries. At the same time a McDouble was on the menu for $1 and any size drink was $1. I'd get two McDoubles, large fries, large drink for $4.25 or so after tax.

Now the McDouble is $2.99, a large fries is $3.49 and the coupons for fries are more rare. Even the drink has gone up to $1.20 for any size. Those two burgers, fries and drink have collectively more than Mcdoubled in price in just a few years.

Well pizza got overall cheaper because they all started chasing the lowest common denominator. Quality of ingredients and cooking went way down hill and the final price dropped. I actually like it better in the good old days when pizza was reasonably priced and tasty. Dominoes actually reversed their game plan and went back to more expensive ingredients and better overall product. But then the lockdown messed up everything and now pizza is both expensive and lousy. Even the local family pizzeria isnt great like it used to be.
