Have you tried Linux yet?

I have been hearing a lot of people lately in this forum that they say that they are trying linux and that's why I wanted to get some real numbers

I have tried Linux and absolutely LOVED it.

My only problem with it was the game software support. Once that changes, I am Linux bound once again!

DISCLAIMER: I was "raised" on DOS though, so I like a system where you "naturaly" boot into a command prompt, then from there (even if scripted) can go into a GUI.

I would request you add a category. "yes, I liked it but do not primarily use it". I have tried Linux, and I use it on certain servers. That being said, I prefer Windows as my main OS, but have no problem using Linux, or going between them (I also prefer command line Linux, and really see no need for the current GUI's. Everything I do on Linux can be done from the command line).

I have debian on my desktop/slackware on my laptop. At office, I used to use win2000. Right now I am having a little confrontation with the sys. admin at my company because of the company policy (all computers should have antivirus software installed on them in order for them to be connected to the Internet).
I am defending the penguin 🙂 And I am confident that I will win

Why don't you humor him and install an antivirus program? At least if you do receive email containing a harmful virus (though not harmful to your system) you won't be able to forward it to someone that it would be harmful to (that is all any Linux AV program does anyway).

Oh, and I voted Yes: All three of my desktops run Mandrake, though one is a dual boot machine with WinME.

i use it off and on, have mandrake with gnome setup
i use it pretty regularly, once i get the second box set up the way i want ill use it alot more; im often too lazy to reboot into mandrake after the wife has windows going

I've tried it on my laptop...it's nice but doesnt do what i want it to do, with support for programs and such...so I use XP mainly.

I've used Linux for several years, but not as a primary OS. I only have two computers, and both my parents and I have applications that require Windows (mine is Photoshop), and do not have equals that work with Linux. Still, I have a VMWare session with Gentoo 1.4 and KDE 3.1 running almost all the time, because I prefer it for a programming environment. 🙂

You can run Knoppix, Damn Small Linux, Gnoppix, or Morphix live from CD with out the need to mod your box, and then there is such thing as dual boot. It doesn't break the rule if Windows partition is still there with Antivirus.

I have Gentoo Linux dual-booted with Win2K. I spend most of my time on Win2K for games and coding, but I'll occasionaly jump to Linux and play around.

oh yep, but do you use windows at work or are you just an Unix kind of guy

Nope, I use a win95 with a IBM terminal emulator on it. I realy don't use windows for windows. And my other 2 terminals are old IBM ones...

So I guess I use System/370, but mostly I just chase 3480 tapes around all night.

i setup a dualboot on my laptop to experiment... and thus far i really like mandrake 9.1 (yes, i know that it's a n00b distro, please don't berate me >_<). However, it cannot substitute for windows yet because i am still relatively unfamiliar with it's workings.

I don't, yet. I've downloaded Redhat 9 and I plan to put that on sometime soon when I've got the time. I've got very little experience with *nix (we use Solaris on the CS machines here at school, but that's just for classwork), so I want to start with something that's a little more user-friendly.

Ahhh, yer a tapejockey! That explains quite a bit actually. 😀

Been using linux as my primary OS since RedHat 5.2 (1998). I have always dual booted and will for the foreseeable future simply because I game and wine just doesn't cut it.

I was using Win2k/XP on my workstations at work. I was basically using it for outlook and ssh/telnet to Solaris and Linux machines. Now I am back to Mac OS X on my laptop at home, SSHing into OpenBSD and Linux. OpenBSD would be my choice if I had to choose only one though.

Gonna miss Solaris... Maybe 😉

I have tried and am using though not as my main OS. Linux has come a long way and I think MS has every right to be and should be worried about Linux. I love Open Office and though I know this will rankle the fur of some Linux people I would probably switch completely if Evolution would integrate with Exchange better. Imagine MS's chagrin if that ever happens. 😀 I can see the headline now: "Users Use Free Email Software To Plug The Microsoft Virus Hole".

I am thinking about playing around but I am confoosed about all the different distros? that are available and what each does.

I understand GUI and CLI etc but Mandrake, Redhat etc what do they do and seeing as I just surf and internet and crunch etc I just keep using Win2k.

I tried Redhat 8.. it was a fairly simple install procedure. I went through it with fairly default settings.

I wasnt impressed by the fact that it needed 3 of the 5 CDs for a 'default' install. Nore was I pleased about the 200+ sh1tty little games and 400+ screensavers that it installed.. People call XP bloated

There was no reason for me to continue using it. I may consider it for web servers in the future, only because most web stuff is coded, documented, and optimized for linux..

What do any of your complaints have to do with linux?

It's too easy to mess up a linux system. Windows has more safegaurds (IMHO). Plus i find it a lot easier to use. I tried linux, but the system got messed up after installing the drivers. Plus it seems more sluggish than windows.
