Have you remodeled your kitchen?

If you have remodeled your kitchen -

How much did it end up costing?

Did you do it yourself, or pay someone else to do it?

How long did it take?

Were there any problems you ran into that you weren't expecting?

oh god we need to. the fucking counter tops are blue and it has the ugliest cabinets ever.

- Yes
- A little over $7000 for cabinets, counters, sink, faucet, tile, paint, new microwave, ect.
- Did it myself
- A little over 3 months and that included a week with a kid in the hospital and a round of kidney stones for me.
- I had to cut out all of the existing drywall and replace it with concrete board for a backer for tile

LOL you gotta bomb the kitchen! you have insects!

it looks great after.

Oooo, forgot the one surprise...pulling out the washer and finding that the subfloor was completely rotted out. Not fun. Had to cut that out and replace.

we were going to replace countertops stove and sink, but decided to save the money for a new house down payment instead. so no. we are considering buying a place with a crappy kitchen we can update to our own tastes tho

about to start it in the next 2 months or so, which will include all new appliances, countertops, floor, removal of part of 2 walls, building of an airlock, addition of a door, removal of some windows. have just about all the planning done

should be ~50K, paying someone else to do it

nice work Vi, was that your old house? I though you built new right? I am looking at new construction and their estimate kitchen upgrades costs to step up to "level 2" were like 20k debating whether to do it my self and stick with "standard level" cabinets/appliances/countertops/sink.

is this your new house, or old one?

I did mine early last year. I did all the work except installing the countertop and it took a few months

-Cabinets ($8000)
-New stove ($2500)
-Quartz countertop ($2500)
-Tile backsplash ($400)
-Tile floor that took a lot of self leveling compound ($1000)
-New sink and faucet ($500)

The cabinets took the most "skill". The floor took the least skill but was the most demand physically.

I can't remember all of the financials since it was eight years ago and I don't want to look through my records.

The two mistakes the contractor made were not lining up the cabinets above the sink to align exactly with the cabinets below. I didn't really notice it myself until I installed some halogen lighting above the sink.

The corner cabinets have one door with two panels in an L shape that has too much weight and I have had to replace the European style hinges. It is actually removed at this time because I am looking for a piano hinge that doesn't look awkward.

If I had it to do over again I would pay more to have a sink below the counter edge rather than dropped in.

yes. cabinets, countertop, sink, backsplash tiles came out to like 6K. Installed cabinets myself with help of father-in-law. Had countertops installed. did backsplash myself

I did mine a couple years ago. I saved a fortune on the cabinets by finding them on Craigslist - the previous owner of a house replaced the cabinets in order to upgrade the kitchen and sell the house. The new owner's wife wanted some exotic type of wood, so I got the majority of my cabinets for only $1000. By coincidence, my wife had picked out that same brand and model of cabinets, so I knew I'd be able to add any cabinets, or purchase any needed hardware. In one picture, you can see that the cabinets don't quite match - that was when 2 were brand new. Now that they've been exposed for a year or two, the difference is indistinguishable.

Other things I did: removed the wall to the basement stairway, reframed the floor, new sub floor, moved a window over, extended a wall vertically, removed ceiling joists to vault ceiling, installed two new skylights, all new electric (11 circuits?), new plumbing,... basically, *everything* was replaced except about 50% of the 75% of the 2x4's in the walls and the roof rafters, though they were modified as well. Oh, and I kept the old kitchen sink.

an embedded reminder to myself - no wonder the garage is going so slowly! No beverage! (damn diet!)

Close to finished; I still haven't gotten around to doing some of the trim; probably will this spring though.:

the kitchen is next to an entrance to the house, entrance is getting an airlock, one of the walls comming down goes into the dining room, there is a poorly used space between the kitchen and rest of the house, where the door is, thats where the airlock is going

Cost? About $8k in ~1999-2000, very small kitchen, quality but not high end finishes.
Who? Myself (with family)
Time? Albout a year - see below.
Issues? Tons but most were because I insisted on doing things right rather than cheap or fast.

It was a house built in 1942, postwar house. Had seen several remodels over the years where stuff was just built up. I didn't start with the intent to do so, but I ended up removing literally everything down to the studs and rafters.

Once the walls were down, I decided to replace the electrical and plumbing that was exposed (had original 2-wire in cloth) to "do it right". Replaced the 2-story main stack and much of the supply for the first and second floor bathrooms (was a duplex, renter in the top floor). Replaced the electrical on that side of the bathroom and to a bedroom that shared a wall. Removed a tiny pantry in favor of refrigerator placement.

New subfloor, then tile. Drywall all around (replaced plaster). Cherry cabinets and formica countertop. Nicer stainless appliances - Jenn Aire downdraft cooktop, nice dishwasher, etc. New garden window over the sink to replace the original that was below counter height. 2 zones of can lights and under cabinet lighting.

The only thing I had a contractor do was the countertop. The walls that it was against were exterior walls and were neither straight nor square. None for me on that, thanks 🙂

I have a breakfast nook I'd like to absorb into the actual kitchen...if I could match the cabinets it sure would make the task easier. But I don't see how it would be easier because I'd basically just want to move one counter top to the edge of the breakfast nook and add some counter top to reach. It certainly wouldn't be easy regardless though...most of it is beyond my skill level. Ours could use a remodel, ugly blue formica counter tops and crappy vinyl floor.

That said with a baby on the way I think its going to remain as is for the foreseeable future. I don't want to deal with the kitchen being unusable for months right now and I REALLY won't later.

How much did it end up costing?
Cabinets $4000
Countertop $2500
Appliances: $2000
Well over $10k after adding in the flooring, hardware, drywall, wiring, insulation, new tools, etc.

Did you do it yourself, or pay someone else to do it? I did everything except the countertops which is included in their pricing structure

How long did it take? Probably a good year since I'm never home on weekends

Were there any problems you ran into that you weren't expecting?Termite damage had to be repaired first

I would do it again and it would be easier the second time around. I have a kitchen in the planning stages to complete within the next couple years at a different house.

We did a partial remodel and did all the work ourselves.

Ordered and installed Corian countertops.

Refinished and painted cabinets.

Fabbed more cabinetry to add space and match existing stuff.

All told it was probably less than three grand. We knew we'd outgrow this house so we didn't go nuts with it.
