I read it a LONG time ago. I know I liked it then but I really don't remember much about it at all.

I think it got banned in my area since I was in school.

why was it banned? i don't recall much of the story.

mostly because it is considered objectionable and vulgar
it's a story that promotes a student that leaves high school to do nothing (iirc)

here's a site that has a list of books that have been censored in the last 15 years, and brief sentence explaining why

i think you should write a letter to your school district telling them this isn't the 50's anymore

Yeah, omg that is ridiculous. Where do you live?

I am in Maryland and I haven't any idea why it got banned. While I don't recall much about it, I do recall that I liked it. Heck, when I was in HS, we read Voltaire's Candide (which was quite risque).

Funny thing is, the school's still include To Kill a Mockingbird in their curricumlum and that has racist themes in it.

So in answer to your question, I don't know why it was banned. Too weird. I never bothered investigating because there are so many OTHER books that my kids have been required to read.

I do not think To Kill a Mockingbird was ever banned by any school. I don't even recall that book being very controversial either
check the link i put up in my previous post ;)

I have to agree :) I just like the way it's written, and sadly it reminds me of one of my friends. It's just quite interesting.

Hated it, just like I do all "life story" books, unless the person happens to be really exceptional.

I love that book. In fact, I've got a copy on my bookshelf in my room. Oh and BTW, you're a phoney. ;)

The children are the only ones that lose when schools start banning books like this; a shame.

Read it in high school, thought it was ok.
I remember the cover of the book being white, and thus getting dirty quite easily.

Those that liked it should read Franny and Zooey. I wouldn't really recommend Nine Stories, but that's just me.

Excellent book. My biggest problem with it is the fact that most the people I've met who've read it miss the whole reconciliation of lost innocence theme and take it at face value for being a cynic's tale of woe in which not a great deal transpires. Even worse are the folks who like it for that very reason, which is most everyone in highschool who can associate themselves with the down and out, bitter, cynical character of Holden Caulfield. The reason I love the book so much is the way his character is keenly perceptive in some ways and makes some very wry observations about the world around him, and yet is oblivious to his own motivations throughout the entire story. It speaks volumes about the skill of Salinger to be able to craft a complex character like that. A very human novel, and I encourage anyone attending a school where this is banned to seek it out at the local library and read it. You owe it to yourselves.

Might as well ban Goldilocks and the Three Bears for promoting breaking and entering.

ban Little Red Riding Hood for killing animals.

ban A Tale of Two Cities for being about French people

No...what I said was that *I* read Catcher in the Rye, Candide, To Kill a Mockingbird, and a long list of other books as required reading.

To my knowledge, Catcher in the Rye was banned. My guess is that Candide was too...but who knows? My oldest son (who graduates this year) didn't read Catcher in the Rye or Candide. My middle son (who has just started HS) had to read To Kill a Mockingbird this year.

Wrote a 14-page analysis over it in college. Regardless, I didn't really care for it much.

I've read it twice and hated it both times.

so umm why did you read it a second time...

First time was required reading in 8th grade.

Second time was required reading in university.

I had forgotten enough of it that I felt I needed to read it the second time. I was also wondering if my opinion would change since I was older. Nope, I hated it more the second time.

So, anyone here watch GITS:SAC for the first half of the episodes? I love how they relate it dead on with the book. So awesome.

I read it...and I honestly don't see why it's as a great a book people make it out to be. Overrated imo.

I hated it but loved "Franny And Zooey", "Nine Stories", and "Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction".
