Have you played the epic win that is called Earthbound/Mother 2?

I have lots of fond memories of this game. I loved the personality and quirkiness of the story and dialogue, the awesome music, and some of the battles are truly epic. The Cave of the past and the final battle with Giygas is one of the most memorable experiences gaming has ever offered me. Been having a blast re-playing it the past couple of days.

It's a shame this game never got the sales or recognition it truly deserved. Who else here has played this undiscovered gem?

I've never beaten it but I loved me some Earthbound back in the day. Mother 3 with English fan translation for GBA is definitely worth checking out if you liked Earthbound. It's a shame it hasn't received a proper, official NA release.

I have done just that. It's a damn shame that Mother 3 will never be released outside of Japan. But with NoA getting burned on sales with Earthbound, the strong emotional story coupled with cartoony graphics, and magical fairy transvestites (magypsies), this sadly will never happen.

One can also hope for a 3-in-1 DS release, but again, this will probably never happen outside of Japan. Still, through the magic of emulation and fan translations, anyone who loves RPGs and considers themself a gamer needs to and can play these great masterpieces.

I've always wanted to play them but I never have gotten the chance. Are they sold or do you have to go the rom route?

man..i used to play Earthbound non stop when i was little!! *snip*

I was 13 when the game came out, and I must have played through the game like 4-5 times in a row... :awe:

I tried to play it but it was just so... kiddie? Maybe I should try again.

You should try it again. Look past the primitive graphics (even for SNES) and you will find a really funny, quirky, yet highly satisfying RPG. The music is some of the best I've ever heard in a game, although the quality doesn't quite hold up today.

I've always wanted to play them but I never have gotten the chance. Are they sold or do you have to go the rom route?

You can find copies of just the cart on eBay from $60-100 depending on condition, or upwards of $400-500 for complete boxed sets. Or you could go the *cough* ROM route, but it's legal only if you actually bought the cartridge.

This was a game, like Psychonauts, where I just couldn't get into the characters/world. They just didn't appeal to me at all to the point where I couldn't enjoy the main draw of them. Its sad, because I normally love quirky stuff like them, but it just didn't do it for me. I'll definitely have to give both some more tries and see if that changes.

I tried to play Earthbound and came out feeling disappointed.

So many gamers herald it as one of the greatest RPGs, but after playing it, I have to assume that they are suffering from nostalgia.

Earthbound has way too many flaws. The plot is uninteresting. I couldn't attach to the characters. The pacing is HORRIBLE, and the game mechanics are poor as well.

I think the game survives on its quirkiness and charm mixed with the nostalgia to forgive the game's faults.

I've been playing through Earthbound on my phone (which is awesome. best use of smartphones ever imo lol.) and would peg it at "pretty good" so far. I've just entered the Desert, however far that is into the game.

Combat was a real weak spot early on but improves substantially once you actually get a real second party member and some more abilities.

Dialogue runs the gamut from hilariously absurd to absurdly dumb. For the most part I think it's a strength but there's a lot of :eyeroll: moments as well.

Story is pretty good - I'm consistently curious about what's going to happen/explaining what's happening - who is Giygas, what is/does Manimani do, etc. It's appeal though lies more in the exposition of what's happening rather than "I care about these characters" - but I think that was much harder to accomplish on past tech and is more of a modern style.

I like it but I don't love it, certainly feel like I'll finish it though.

I think that is partially right. When I think of Eathbound, I think of the fun stuff: Carpainter, Fourside, fuzzy pickles.

What I have forgotten is the bad stuff: anything in Winters or Scaraba, hoarding and spamming bottle rockets, or grinding Starmen for HOURS trying to get Poo's only weapon and never succeeding because the success rate is like a lottery ticket.

With that said, Mother 1 is probably the best NES RPG and Mother 3 is better than Earthbound.

I think Mother 2 is one of the most overrated games of all time. I played it a year or two ago, and thought it was complete trash.
