Have you heard about HUDway? It is an app that projects the road on the windshield

HUDway is a free Head-Up Display that projects the road on the screen

I am going to check it out today. Seems cool (the link goes through my site, checkout two links below the vid).

It might be interesting to see how it performs at night. It will drain the battery for sure, and it might be a good idea to adjust the phone's brightness all the way down...

the video on your site in annoying.

here is the official website:

I disagree, that video is great. It features: rally driving...somewhat fast paced, difficult conditions (rain), dark, turbo gauges, and shitty unpaved road somewhere in Russia. I wanted to show the app "in action". Also, that WRX'es turbo sounds nice and this is a "garage" sub-forums 😀

A good idea but a GPS version might be nice for those that don't have mobile internet available and want to select their route on the go.

I've just tried it and it is a very cool gadget - at night or when there is an overcast. Does not work very well in a direct sunlight, but then you can see the road well so the HUD is not needed anyway. I could see trying to use it as an aid when driving into an unknown at night. The HUD effect is very cool.
I bought this to hold my phone in place and it works GREAT (bought mine at MicroCenter):

I've already got a device that projects an image of the road onto my windscreen, it's called "the sun".😛

I've actually tried the smartphone HUD thing with Torque, and it works OK...although you want to project onto a slightly tinted section of the windscreen for the best visibility.

Odd that they chose a 'rally' type of setting to demonstrate. I guess I can see the idea ('it's better than a co-driver!'), but to me it just demonstrates how a dude with a paper map can be more helpful. Even in the video, which seems like 'worst case scenario' for visibility (high speed, 'road' constantly obscured by surroundings)...it seems kinda useless. The picture on the windshield isn't really providing him with any more info than...you know...the windshield. Just distracting.

Reminds me of when I try to play modern 'tactical' shooters like Call of Duty. 'Aha! I see a hidden enemy on the map...right...over...here...'

'...aaaannnd...yup, his clearly visible teammate just stabbed me in the face.'

There's a reason rally racing uses co-drivers. The instruction is filtered down to only what is pertinent, and it's in their ear rather than in front of their face. Holding a map in front of the driver's face instead would not work so well, I think.
