Well,

I play a lot of card games in my computer, and I do some word-processing. When I deal cards in spider solitarie or other games, it runs slower than the other rig in the house(which has an old ati card 7 years old). Also when I highlight lots of pages in Microsoft Word I could tell that my cpu performance (task manager in Win2k) showed that my cpu was working at the most.

I am disapointed that my video card can't handle card games!

You mentioned "quite a few problems". . . . this comes as quite a surprise and is pretty unrelated to your video card. Any visual issues?

Well,

I play a lot of card games, but with any kind of 2d games that put a lot of pressure on my computer, my computer would crash and I had to restart it, from the back of the case. Finally this morning, after spending a lot of time in the computer trying to solve my problems, I tried an older version of the catalyst driver and that fixed the problems.

Thanks a lot for the replies!

Aha, another victim of the DirectX-not-8.1b problems! :)

The Catalyst drivers update your DirectX files to the 8.1b standard which solves alot of problems with the whole system.

the only problems i have had with my radeon 8500 le were results of motherboard incompatibilyt (epox 8kha) which a new bios revision fixes, and overclocking too high.. other than that..it is running great for me.. i have never been happier with a video card:)

my radeon 7500 64MB card runs likea champ!! No problems at all with buggy drivers or tv-out. Flawless ... the tvout via S-video to my tv is fabulous and teh quality is awesome. Some of the DVD RIPS and some screeners look awesome.

I've only owned 1 ATI video card, the 8500 in my wife's pc. It's about 5 months old. No problems at all. All of the pc's at work (a few hundred) have ATI video cards. These pc's are several years old and I've never seen one go bad. I'm not claiming to know the history of hundreds of pc's up here, I'm just saying I've never personally seen or heard of one going bad.

My current Radeon works great. So far the only problems I've had is minor black square outlines around the coronas in Undying and minor black flickering textures in Unreal under Direct3D mode (I use OpenGL anyway so it doesn't really concern me). But other than that I've had zero stability issues or other serious problems.

I'm eagerly awaiting my Radeon 9700 Pro.

I've had various problems with drivers for my All in Wonder Radeon. TV channels not recognized, video capture problems, etc. This happened mostly in a Win98 machine. Using the Catalyst drivers and WinXP has since solved 95% or more of my problems.

I have used 2 ATi Cards, one was an old ATi Rage Pro, and I had loads of problems with that system (which was a ALi Aladdin 5 and it is fairly well known that ATi+Suoer7=Trouble so). I also have a Radeon 7500 in the system I type this on, and am using HydraVision for Dual Monitors, and I have had absolutely no problems with it. Honestly, I think that ATi's drivers are at nVidia's level in terms of stability/reliability, but in terms of optimizations, they still are waaaayyyyy behind nVidia.
