Have you had any problems with an ATI video card?

Hi,

I have purchased recently a Radeon 8500LE, and I am having quite a few problems with this card and the 2D performance. Have you had any problems with this type of video card or any other ati video card?

Thanks for the replies!

Yep, sure did. The first problem I had was system stability. There was a persistent problem where it would go to a black screen when the system was under a heavy load. Every once in awhile it would randomly do it, too. At first I though there was bad memory since both sticks were generic. Then I thought it was the drivers so I reinstalled them. It was the drivers. :disgust:

I am using Win98SE and booted into safe mode. I went into the hardware properties and deleted any and every driver for both the motherboard's soundcard and videocard. Why? Because I wanted to make sure that only the LATEST and GREATEST drivers were loaded. Almost every VIA device had to be upgraded manually, though, as the OS kept trying to reuse old drivers in the system folder! What a pain in the ass. Well, that solved 95% of the problems. The black screen happened when loading GTA3. Loading the latest DirectX (8.1b) from Microsoft's download center cured that.

So basically it a combination of bad drivers and a buggy DirectX 8.0 patch that was causing all of my problems. It has yet to crash since the complete overhaul of the drivers. Amazing, stability with a VIA chipset. Really, I am just kidding. These boards have never been all that tough to get running stable. Most people just don't understand the drivers systems and how they function in regards to the OS. :D

I had a Radeon64 and had problems with it. One was a hardware defect that caused a "wavy" 2d output on many trinitron monitors. I had one and it wasn't very cool paying $300 for a video card that does that. Had some issues with some games as well. That was my last ATI card for me. I'm using nVidia since and am happy...

yup. i bought the 8500 when it first came out. man those drivers were ass at first. i couldn't even get it to run my cs correctly, so i egayed it. but i've heard they've fixed the drivers now, so i'm considering getting the 8500 again for a backup rig.

Yep.

Had the RADEON 8500 OEM for 3 days and RMA'd it for a GF4 due to crashes, not to mention the CD was useless. Would not install anything much less the drivers.

Just an observation... With a general thread title like...

Have you had any problems with an ATI video card?

What sort of replies do you expect?

Would you actually like some ideas on fixing your problem or is this just a survey? ;) :p

Nope. I think most your "problem" can be solve when install correct Driver.

There are 2 version of driver, one for Buid-by, and one for Power-by....most OEM are Power-by and should use teh Power-by driver instead of Build-by one.

I just want to know what are people's opinion, even if they are general.

Hi,

I am just trying to see, if a lot of people have had problems at all with their video card and 2d performance. Nowadays, nobody seems very concerned with 2d performance.

ATI has done wonders with its Catalyst drivers. Since their release I've had zero problems. It was a long and grueling road for ATI and (more importantly) us users, but I can finally use my AIW Radeon in peace :)

The Catalysts install DX8.1b which most people don't realize is a must for stability. If you have an older DirectX version then it will continually crash or blue screen on you. If you read the install directions it is very straight forward about this requirement. Most people don't RTFM unfortunately, which leads to PR problems. Catalyst solves this for ATI.

Sure I had problems. Solving them led me to a much greater working knowledge of my computer. I learned all about IRQ sharing with my Radeon 64DDR VIVO. It's actually kinda sad to see it go . . . I just sold it for $45 on FS/T. :(

Before that, I had no problems with ATI's Rage Fury 32. Never a 2D problem - exceptional 2D with ATI. Actually, I had an Asus GeForce 256 that I could never get to work right in games (artifacting) and sub-par 2D, but that's another thread . . . . ;)

HOWEVER, I just came back with a brand new baby - ATI's 8500 128MB DDR (Video Out, Retail, not LE) that I got today at CompUSA for $129. :D

IF you have problems, the forum guys at Rage3D.com are very helpful and knowledgeable (even ATI tech people monitor their forums to help).

ATI Rage128Pro
ATI Radeon 64MB VIVO
ATI Radeon 8500LE 128MB Retail (for a week and a half...)

No problems with any. Only returned the 8500 because we needed every cent we could muster for a down payment on a house.

I have a Rage 128 pro. I never really had a problem. Here is the closest thing to a problem I had. when I first purchased the card, ATI was saying that the drivers were unable to use video in to copy video. i however, was able to this with out a problem. After I updated to the latest drivers, i could no longer copy with video in. I then reinstalled my old drivers and the problem still happened. I waited for the next batch of drivers and the problem was fixed. I still have no idea why my video in never carshed the first time around....

Nope. I've owned three ATi cards, two Radeon 32DDRs and one Radeon 7500. I run each on three different Intel boxes, each using official ATi drivers. I've had zero problems.

A quick question for fellow 8500 owners. . . . Did I need to do ANYTHING but upgrade to DX8.1b and unplug my old Radeon 64DDR VIVO and just plug in my 8500?

I didn't bother with the 8500 CD at all (same MMC and DVD support) . . .

Windows recognized the new card . . . 3DMark2001 scores more than doubled. Seemed to work fine . . . the drivers were the latest off the net for the Radeon 64 as the 8500 . . . or am I missing something subtle (or obvious)?

???

EDIT: Oops, yeah . . . Hydravision!

EDIT: BTW, I DID have a problem with my 8500's installation - SBlive disappeared. :Q I had to remove the SB card and put it in another PCI slot . . . Windoze then recognized it . . . evidently THIS Radeon doesn't have a problem with sharing IRQs - it is currently on 11 with SBlive (something my older Radeon would never tolerate). Good progress, ATI!

I've had no problems at all. And along the lines of what Insane3d said....with a topic like that your probably gonna get more people saying they've had problems than people saying they havn't...just my $0.2.

Just really curious . . . WHAT kind of 2D problems are YOU having with your 8500?
