Apparently, I bought my 600GB from Macmall and the drive literally failed within a week. But, to my surprise, the serial number is for an elements drive, and the label didn't say "WD Velociraptor (TM)" it just said "Veloraptor". I thought it was quite strange....

does the drive at least LOOK like a velociraptor? a smaller 2.5" drive inside of a giant heatsink?

here we go...

imag0128g.jpg

there's a shot of the drive.. of course, I photoshopped out the S/N, since it's already registered to me... I hope I win like a million dollars for finding the misprint! And yes, it's enclosed in a massive heatsink, and it's only 2.5"

Was the box sealed when you purchased it? The label just looks fishy to me.

Well, if we compare that shot to this, there are definitely some differences between the labels. Looks like you got screwed.

OK - it is time that one of the "Veloraptor" users called WDC to verify - a label error or counterfeit drive? Interesting that the Veloraptor label is 8 days newer than the Velociraptor one.

and the serial comes up to be 2TB elements drive! I purchased this drive from Macmall.com, where they had that outstanding deal for VeloCIraptor drives!

I called WD about the clicking drive, and sent them a picture of the drive (of course with the label as well) and my invoice from macmall.com. They updated their system to change the s/n over to a velociraptor, and now i have my advanced RMA drive... I really really hope it's a gag by WDC and that I'll get a lifetime supply of WDC drives, or like $10,000 for finding such a drive!

yeh the drive do also come without the 3.5" bay for servers. keep in mind most servers put the drives on sleds in the front of the case for the coldest air pull (very high CFM no less). the way these puppies mout in my mac pro - no doubt they'd overheat. not enough cfm. probably some grey market product. you probably got someone in trouble for selling that in the usa lol.

damn so veloraptor is not a misprint but rather a to indicate the "newer" velociraptors!

If you're referring to this post :
veloraptor is a year newer 2011 vs 2010

He means the dates on the two drives are not the same year, one is 2010, one is 2011. He didn't mean the "Veloraptor" is a newer model.
Some people shorten the name Velociraptor to Veloraptor for some reason and it looks like the grey market appropriated the name by mistake.

as it turns out, the drive is fake. WD sent the drive back, now I'm dealing with a huge ordeal with macmall.com...

be careful when you purchase from them... they MAY have fake stock...

But you never answered the question, was the package already open when you purchased it?

package was NOT opened when I received it. But it was an OEM drive. so the static wrapping was still sealed.
