Lipid nanoparticles have been researched for 50+ years. Lipids are one of the most common components of cellular life. They are used in various medications, including medications that have been used in medical practice for 20+ years like AmBisome and Doxil, and many others that are taken by mouth. Lipid nanoparticles have been used for nucleic acid delivery for research trials for many years and the first FDA approved nucleic acid drug was approved in 2018, named Patisiran. Subsequently, additional nanoparticle drugs have been found to be safe and effective including Givlaari and Lumasiran (and the European Union has approved inclisiran).
