Have you ever wondered what happens to people who go missing?

You see so many faces on those posters, everytime you go into the post office, the grocery store, even in your mail on those little cards.

Ever wonder what happened to those people? Are they ever found?

In a typical year . . .

* 1,000,000 children run away from home, mostly because of abusive treatment, including sexual abuse,
from parents and other adults. Of the many sexually abused children among runaways, 83 percent
come from white families.

* 150,000 children are reported missing.

* 50,000 of these simply vanish. Their ages range from one year to mid-teens. According to the New
York Times, "Some of these are dead, perhaps half of the John and Jane Does annually buried in this
country are unidentified kids."

What happens to the rest? Maybe it's just my morbid imagination . . . but what happens to them?

i would imagine that horrible things happen to them, and they eventually get killed... actually the killed ones are probably the luckier ones, after hearing some of the stories there are... 🙁

just a quick realization:

John Wayne Gacy had the bodies of 27 young men and boys buried in the crawl space underneath his house. the only reason he was caught is because he screwed up with his last victim and the parents were relentless (as were the police) in finding proof of him being the killer. They still haven't identified a few of the bodies they found...hence they are forever considered missing because they can't indentify them. that is just one case where a killer was caught...........

<< They are in my basement, and I'm not letting them go until the experiment is complete. >>

That's an total @$$hole thing to say. If your kids were missing would you still be joking around? (mastertech01's daughter has been missing for 1-2 years now) There's nothing funny about it.

These stats seem to bear out, I checked the Department of Justice. I haven't found any numbers for people being found, but these are the missing . . .

"The number of missing persons reported to law enforcement has increased from 154,341 in 1982 to 876,213 in 2000. That is an increase of 468%."

"Kidnapping makes up less than 2 percent of all violent crimes against juveniles reported to police."

These numbers are from 1988 . . .

114,600 Attempted Abductions;

4,600 Non-Family Abductions;

450,700 Runaways;

438,200 Lost/Injured/Otherwise Missing;

354,100 Family Abductions;

127,100 Thrownaway Children.

I just can't wrap my mind around these numbers . . . half of them just . . . vanish? It doesn't seem possible, what with the technology we have today.

if anyone cares to read some success stories of missing children being found...go here

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is a GREAT organization...

Xerox Man if you want more up to date numbers, i would recommend contacting the NCMEC. they should be able to help you out...or point you in the right direction for numbers including adults.

Almost three actually. It was the day before my birthday, 1999. I remember my birthday that year clearly, I got what I considered to be a bad review from my then employer. Seems pretty unimportant now. 😱

i also think that is a really dick headed thing to say. when you have children, maybe you'll understand how precious they are. or imagine if one of your relatives, or close friends were abducted? how would you feel? joking still?

there was this book (true story) about this married couple that would pick up people off the streets and rape them, then brutally murder them... they picked up mostly "low-lives" and people off the side of the road that werent "important to society"... they got away with it for a long time until they picked up someone from college, and everyone was all over it, and they eventually got arrested... it was a good book and if anyone knows the slightest idea what im talking about post it i need to look for that book again 🙂 i think it happened in the late 80's, and some of the things that went on happened in riverside, cali, about 15 minutes from where i live

but yah i'd guess lots of them run away and get picked up... very very sad

wtf? how is anyone not "in the know" supposed to automatically know whether one forum member has a missing child?

It gladens my heart that someone else in the world has read some Vonnegut 🙂
