Have you ever watched a movie and thought, or said, "This was written by a Black person." Whether or not the film had Black actors or a Black theme, you felt a cultural connection or emotional flavor that only someone of African descent could have created. Well, as it turns out, there is a multibillion dollar lawsuit successfully circulating through the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles regarding the blockbuster Matrix and Terminator movies.

From all appearances and evidence, the multibillion dollar grossing productions are allegedly stolen stories originally conceived, authored and copyrighted by poet and science fiction screenwriter Sophia Stewart. Based on her 1981 work, The Third Eye, it is actually several stories that resemble the three Terminator films that the Matrix movies spring from. In fact, her case seems so tight that she may even have the Federal Bureau of Investigation and several key film company employees as backup in winning her case. It turns out that this case goes beyond simple plagiarism, and crosses clearly into allegations of violating the federal RICO Act (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) . . . MORE >

what does the person being black have to do with the law suit?

and the writer obviously hasn't heard that Harlan Ellison already sued (successfully) James Cameron for stealing some ideas from some episodes of the 1960s series the Outer Limits. maybe Harlan Ellison should sue HER. ha!

Yeah, I heard about this author and lawsuit quite some time ago....pretty sure it was here on ATOT. IIRC, she had a pretty compelling argument and some industry employees had let it slip...but that was only about The Matrix, never heard anything about the Terminator.

In any case, Terminator and The Matrix are just about the last movies that would make me think, "hmmmm....these movies sure seem to have a deep connection with black culture. Must have been written by a black person."

I said it before and I'll say it again: She will never see one single dime.
All that "article" says is that the case hasn't been dismissed.

I am highly skeptical that her claims are valid anyway.

There are a LOT of similar stories in this world, if the character names and plot isn't identical than the case should be tossed. You can't copyright an idea, you can copyright a story but not a basic plotline. Someone can take a similar plot line and alter it and it's a unique work. If that isn't allowed than 90% of the books published every year would be copyright violations.
