I used to work as a recreational rentals and operations crew supervisor at a local lake. Anyways at work we ran two rental and operational locations, one had all the infrastructure in place (docks, rental shacks, storage, janitorial, etc.) and the other was an afterthought so the infrastructure wasn't emplaced or completely thought out. The secondary rental shack was just a 6x6, 8ft tall tarp with just one or two guys working there during the day, while the primary would have 10-20 working at a time.

By late spring/early summer the grass was starting to die off under the tarp. I got called into the office since it looked crappy to have a dead patch of grass there by the main landing from the parking lot and told to fix it.

I suggested moving the tarp onto the beach-"No, it will take away beach space"
I countered with we could put the tarp over the beach space already occupied by the beached, available to-be-rented boats in the sand - No.
I suggested moving the tarp about 10 yards further away from the current location-No, that's too far from main entry way
I countered with we could rotate and move it further away during the slower half of the week, and move it closer for Thurs-Sun -- Also a no from the boss
I suggested moving the tarp onto the concrete in front of the dock, No it blocks the walkway and dock acceess

So in addition to carrying all the boats from the water to the storage lock up on the complete other complete other side of the facility (again, this location was an afterthought and poorly designed) and along with maintaining the cleanliness of the facility throughout the day and at closing

His genius idea was
To put away and take the tarp down daily AT NIGHT so that the grass could grow

After about a 45 second silence, I told him that was the dumbest fvcking idea I have ever heard.

I'm going back next week to talk with a client (well, okay, my boss); I need to pick up my last paycheck and I want to explain to him why I'm not working for him anymore. He had a number of policies that I thought were unfair/unreasonable/borderline illegal, and his management style bordered on abusive. It's quite interesting, though, as he has said to everyone in the office that he wants me back, repeatedly. I wonder if he'd say the same if I were to tell him exactly why I'm not coming back.

If it goes well and he's receptive I'm considering offering to do some part-time consulting Spring quarter when I'll have more time and my future is a bit more certain. In either case I want to part amicably because there's always the possibility I could need a job or a reference.

But, man, there were times I've wanted to tell him off so much. Pity I'm so restrained.
