There was one day I was at an intersection near my house, and behind us an Ambulance was coming with its lights on. The light going our direction had just turned red, and the Ambulance started to slow down to enter the intersection with the sirens on.

The other direction, there were 2 lanes, the left lane had about 3 cars in it and they were all stopped. The right lane had no cars, and I looked and saw an SUV (an older Ford Explorer I think) coming towards the intersection pretty fast. I thought the guy was a jerk for not slowing down ... but from my vantage point it looked like he would be going just slow enough to let the Ambulance pass through the intersection before he passed through. I was totally wrong, and the explorer slammed into the back of the ambulance. I realized it a split second before it happened and all I could say was "I can't believe..." before it happened. The ambulance stood up on one side for a split second and I thought it was going to tip over. The explorer did not slow down at all before impact and he probably hit the ambulance going about 35-40mph. All I could say after it happened was "HOLY S*IT! I can't believe he didn't slow down!" ... I have no idea why the explorer didn't slow down at all. Maybe the person was drunk or not paying attention ... but the lights and sirens are a pretty good indicator to most people that they should slow down.

Anyways, luckily the ambulance didn't tip over, and it didn't seem like they were carrying anybody (I think they were going to pick someone up). In any case, we called 911 to tell them about the accident (pretty dumb since the ambulance probably radio'ed it in already, but we wanted to be safe). Everyone was OK from what I could tell because they were all walking around after the accident.

Was pretty much in disbelief the rest of the day that I had seen the accident unfold before my eyes. I knew it was going to happen ... I just couldn't do anything about it. Luckily this one wasn't that bad.

Waaaaaaaaaay to go SUV driver. Way to be paying attention drinving that oversides family wagon :p

Did you notice if the Explorer driver got a ticket? People who don't yeild for police and ambulances piss me off to no end. Even if you're on the other side of the road, even if its multiple lanes, you PULL OVER (unless it's a divided highway). I was trying to turn left into my driveway the other day, and traffic was flowing past me on the shoulder. I see an ambulance coming in the opposite direction and people just kept going around me on the shoulder. I had to just sit there in the middle of the road because these people were too self-absorbed to realize that there was an ambulance coming.

I had 2 seperate accidents happen around me.

The first was when I was stationed in Tucson. I was driving in the center lane with a motorcycle on my left and another car on my right. A van pulled out in front of the motocycle. He tried to stop, lost control and started rolling. Must have done 3 complete revolutions with his bike before it seperated from him and left him in the road. All this right outside my window. I stopped along with others and made him lay there with his helmet on completly still until the paramedics came. Never found out how he did.

The other was when I was in England. A car ahead of me blew a tire and lost control. If anyone knows about the roads in England, especially in town, they are very narrow. With nowhere to go, the car flew into the trees on the side and went head on into one. The woman driving was dazed and cut up, but she was most worried about her duaghter in the back, an infant. Since we didn't know the extent of the unjuries and traffice now was almost impossible to get emergency vehicles to the area, we kept the baby in the infant seat and pulled it through the rear window (which was shattered). A taxi took the mom and baby to the hospital. Both recovered.

My friend saw one a few months ago. He stopped at a red light in the left of two straight lanes, and there was also a third, left turn only lane. He looked in the rearview and saw a guy approaching the intersection (everyone stopped at the light) very fast. There were fewer cars in the far right lane, so he pulled over there. As soon as he got over, the guy slammed into the last car in the left turn lane, doing at least 45mph. The guy must have been running from someone.

I was driving down I-5 in Sacramento in the middle lane when I glanced in my rearview and spotted a white sedan that had just rubbed against a semi in the adjacent lane. I watched in horror as the car was spun sideways and was pulled under the wheels of the semi, having its entire front section crushed. At 70mph the carnage was pretty horific with glass and metal flying everywhere. I got on my cellphone and called 911 and reported the accident, the dispatcher told me units were already on the way. I asked if I should pull over and go back to the accident and she told me there were already people on the scene talking to other dispatchers.

I'm just thankful I was ahead of the sedan instead of behind it. And luckly there were no other cars following close behind the semi or sedan when the accident occured.

Seems it is legal in California only, if done in a "safe manner." Not sure what the actual wording of the law is, that's just the way that article described it. I'm not sure that doing it at 80 mph would be considered safe. Hey, at least the guy's alright.
I don't think you'll find any actual wording of the law, because I don't think there is a law that actually addresses it. That's what I mean by not illegal. The difference is not that big of a deal.
so basically you're saying you wouldn't get ticketed for it, but if you got into an accident, you would be at fault?
In CA, you probably still get ticketed if you're doing it like a dickhead. It's sort of a judgement call. Whether you get ticketed or are at fault would obviously depend entirely on the circumstances.

EDIT: Damn, that link got all f-d up

EDIT AGAIN: Fvck it

I was sitting at a stop light of a tollway (service road) and a normal road. It's a really busy intersection but it was about 2pm. Anyway I was sitting there when I saw this car turning left. The cars on the left hand side of me were going too apparently. This car going about 50 nailed the Jeep that was turning left. The Jeep skidded literally about a foot from my bumper - I was scared sh!tless it was going to nail me. The light turned green about 10 seconds after the Jeep came to a stop so I just mosied on my way to school.

hmm. didn't witness it happen, but rode by the aftermath... a jeep grand cherokee pinned on it's side underneath a semi trailer. Wouldn't have thought it was possible until I saw it.

I didn't stay long enough to see if the driver with the Explorer got a ticket. There were a ton of people who stopped, and we were running late so after we made the call we took off.

It is annoying that people don't stop for emergency vehicles. I know in most states, the law is that emergency vehicles should be able to drive down the middle of a road (as in taking up both directions of traffic). Around here, most people stop though ... Sometimes even when the highway is divided they stop (which is kindof silly imho, but at least they're aware of it). The accident was one of the few times I saw someone completely ignore an emergency vehicle.

yah it's so weird too when you're in the car b/c it's like slow motion and you can't hear any of the outside noises so it's really surreal

I've had a car t-boned right in front of me at a light. Guy driving to HS in the morning and a soccer mom in a SUV rammed into him doing like 50. She totally ran the red light and. His car spun like a top and barely missed the front of my car as it rammed into the lightpost. The whole front end of his car was messed up, engine fell out. That one was crazy because I was stopped and it was literally 3 feet in front of me. Stupid soccer mom was in a rush to get her kid to school...

I've encountered 2 accidents on Rt. 95 driving down to Maryland. The first one was a BMW X5 SUV that flipped on the highway. I saw the car tip and just roll in my rearview mirror. He was trying to pass some cars at high speed. I didn't/didn't want to see the aftermath of that one. The one thing I remember about that one was the front doors flying off the car as it flipped in the air. The second one was a car spinning out in front of me during a turn in the highway. It has just started to rain and he was also trying to pass a car. He just lost control and locked up his tires. Amazingly he didn't hit any other cars... I had to pull over after that one and catch my breath.

rant: I hate cyclists who complain about not getting a fair share of the road and then they go inbetween traffic at a red light, or don't stop at a stop sign. If you want to be treated like a car then act like one. I have no respect for Motorcycle riders either. non whatsoever.

Uh... I've never noticed motorcycles running stop signs or red lights any more than cars do. And in some states it's legal for motorcycles to go through a red light after stopping to be sure it's safe, because the automatic sensors can't tell they're there.

Car Chase Story

Cliff Notes.
We went to Vegas Wed 7/21 and I saw this guy coming up on me going about 100 mph
He passed us on the shoulder and was driving in and out of traffic
Saw him pulled over by the Police 20 miles up the road.
Saw him coming up again in my rear view mirror 3 minutes later going 100+.
Police and helicopter chase.
Saw what was left of his Camaro 10 minutes later.
Good riddance for endangering so many people.

Agreed on motorcyclists. 99% of them aim to piss off people as much as they can. The ones under 25 y/o do it by zipping around like wasps on those Ninjas, the ones over 25 by having their Harley modified to be ever so slightly louder than a nuclear bomb blast.

Yeah same here. :) If I'm hitting 70 the car is not very stable and it feels as if the engine is about to explode from the stress. My car is a one sorry vehicle......

Anyways, I'm not sure what the speed limits are in California, but 80 or above sounds like some serious speeding. I would still blame the Civic driver for not being aware of what was going on around him.

I've seen a couple of nasty accidents before, and I also saw a cycle accident too but this one was very horrible and fatal (the worst I've ever seen). I was at an intersection a few cars behind the first guy at the red light.

A motorcylce was coming in the oposite direction from me and it was traveling at a pretty high speed. He was making a left turn. There were hardly any cars in the intersecting street, so I assume the guy just wasn't paying attention and though he had the green light. He noticed an oncoming pickup crossing the intersection at the last second and tried to swerve to avoid it and fell. The cycle fell over and slid right under the truck . The guy was killed and pretty badly mangled. The pickup driver was hysterical. It wasn't his fault but he was freaking out. I don't blame him. I was freaked out enough just seeing it.
