Have you ever raced a rental car? What rental car do you like best?

monte carlo (2001) - that thing packed some punch...
cadallic - at least can both haul my ass around and race a little...

btw, i use AVIS. another company that got a good sports car lineup? actually i prefer big sleepers... things that people don't expect you to race them with so grand am are out the question although those things well... not bad.

I just read an article on MSNBC the other day (or did I find it here???) about rental companies putting GPS in their vehicles. A man got his bill after having a rental vehicle for 3 days and he was charged $450 above the rental fee for going over 79 mph on three separate occasions. They track everything. He bithced about it and is suing them even though it clearly stated on the rental contract that they would be tracking the vehicle.
Better hope Avis doesn't start doing it......

I ran around in a '01 Mitsubishi Galant for a couple days the beginning of this week.

I know that it will run the tach all the way up to 6000 RPM before shifting if you really try :)

never raced it, but I had a Ford Tempo rental years ago that I ruined the transaxle in----we were out cruising around and "neutral banging" it(put it in neutral, rev the engine, then bang it into drive), and I went past neutral and into reverse. BANG! I could still drive it, but it made some godawful noises. I called the rental company and told them the transmission sounded funny and they swapped it for an Escort.

Yeah, the new ones with the 3800 V6 aren't that quick - they do have lots of torque, so its easy to break the tires loose, but they're just not that fast.

It's not an option, rental companies are starting to put them in all vehicles.

Had a Saab 9^3 for rental from Enterprise for about a week. Once that turbo kicked in hahahaha....
Also an Olds Aurora 2001. That thing was ok. No kick though.
Had a F150 2000 rental as well. Hahaha, offroading
Volvo S40 2001 tested out the traction control did some spinning out too. Fun car!

Overall I think I'd go with the Saab as the best rental I've had. It had heated and cooled seats and everything you could imagine. Second up would be the Aurora. Nice roomy plush car. Took it on a weekend drive up to Santa Barbara and it was really nice.

Hmmm... what else. Some things I do to all my rentals
1) Remove air filter
2) Smoke the tires (if they are FWD, I just pull up to a curb and burn them hehehe
3) Try and do a neutral drop.
4) Test the brakes :D
5) Try to drift

Hahahaha..... man, I usually have about 4-5 rentals per year. It's fun it tell ya.

well i was driving mostly in city and semi-busy-not-so-nyc-highways so really was about just gunning the car at lights and cutting everybody* off... oh well, fun is fun as long as no one gets hurt.

*everybody = wanna be in a rice out car or a sports car, not any car with kids or granny in there

I don't beat rental cars simply cause they're usually not fast. The last one my parents got was a Altima GXE. Before that, a Olds Alero. Blah, slow cars.

Enterprise has some pretty good cars. Budget around here sometimes has the Jag XK8, saleen mustang, and some other performance cars. Hahah.... still gotta find a way to convince my dealer to pay for one of those! :)

Was that a speeding ticket or what? I have not seen anywhere in a rental contract that says you have to stick to speed limits. It does say that you will be responsible for all tickets and traffic violations... but is that not the job of the state??

We set a new Los Angeles to Las Vegas speed record in a Toyota Camry rental car @ 3.5 hours.
The only 2 throttle positions used were wide open and idle.

I've had several, never really raced them. My two favorites were a PArk Avenue and a 'loaded' Alero. The buick was just plain nice, the Alero I got had a little spunk to it, leather, nice sound system for a rental. Not a bad little car.

The article about GPS (was at www.fark.com about 3 days ago - me too lazy to find link but its easy to find) said that the contract on this particular rental specifically said they would be tracking for speed. Its because they know that people abuse rental cars so damn badly :)

when people saw me power sliding thru a turn (drifting) in a cadallic, they were all shocked...

basically i go towards a turn without braking and pull the hand break before i gun the turn and floor that sucker in 1st gear to slam that thing out the turn...

i hope i don't get the same car again...

btw, anyone every tried to put lighter fluid into the gas tank? moth balls? those so-called redneck nitrous thing... haven't tried it... wanted to tho

Albeit a bit more expense, there are many places that rent out dodge vipers, older lamborghinis, ferraris, etc. Think it may cost up around 400 a day, but if you really want to race something fast it might be worth it.
