Have you ever purchased blank dual layer DVD media?

I am out of the loop on DVD writing... I am getting a dual layer burner in my new laptop, however I never have bought the media for it. I have only bought single layer DVD media. Is it really THAT expensive?

When you can buy media that writes at 16x for $.23 each, how could you ever justify spending 6-30x as much for something that holds only twice as much... it just doesn't make sense

copying movies
Exactly! If you want to make a perfect, uncompressed copy of one of your dvd movies. That's the only thing that I use DL for. I'd never use DL just for storage when the single layer dvd's are so much cheaper.

I remember when the early adopters around here were coughing up a couple hundred bucks for the wondrous Yamaha 8X SCSI CD burners. My, we sure have gotten frugal over the years!

I remember that too. Back when you knew 1 person with a drive and you didn't dare move the mouse until the burn was complete!

Heh, so true. Actually, I would say that was a serious problem until we got neat the 3ghz/1gb ram range.

Nice. Uncompressed copies that will last about a year and a half.

Hopefully, in a year and a half, DL will be as inexpensive as single layer is now and then I can just burn a copy of my copy onto a new DL disc.

i am one of them... i spent like 2 hundred or something on a 8X SCSI CD-R recordable (only) burner... i am still calling myself stupid for that.

Speak for yourself. I had a badass 8X SCSI burner that served me faithfully.

By that time, the Blu-Ray burners will be out.

As long as they don't put movies on Blu-Ray discs right away, I will have no need to use them for movies. Even then, there will still be a ton of older movies out there recorded on DL discs.

I still don't do it if it's an important burn. I still have it in my head that I'll get a better burn if I burn something and then walk away from the computer while it's burning.

Heh I paid $400+ for a Plextor 8X SCSI CD burner and it was worth every penny back then. I remember when a 25 pack of CDs were on sale for $50...me and my friends would hoard them like there was no tomorrow.

Had a friend spend a $1,000 for a 1X CD burner back when they first came out. He decided it wasn't worth it and returned it 😉
