I usually learn as little as possible about a movie before I buy it, because I'm very hard to surprise. The sense of wonder is hard enough for me to get from movies without wondering when I'm going to see that cool shot from the trailer. I almost never watch trailers, especially for movies I already plan to watch, and I almost never rent movies anymore (partially because most newer movies have little appeal for me). I can generally grab the disc for about twice the cost to rent online.
My annual TV/movie budget is $6-8K, so I buy fairly indiscriminately. I went from buying DVDs to Blu-Rays to iTunes/Vudu/Flixster. But now that I have Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, I don't feel the need need to buy so much.
