Have you ever killed equipment due to static discharge?

I've never damaged a piece of computer with a static disharge in 20+ years of tinkering, at least that I'm aware of. I do ground myself when working around ICs however.

I don't feel left out. I destroy good hardware with different methods. ;)

Never killed anything directly, never used static straps or mats either. I've always made sure to touch the case to eliminate any nasty shocks hitting something.

I'm not sure if the minor static has lessened the life of anything though.

Back in the mid 80s, memory sipps would die just by looking at them wrong. I have killed many a sipp and MCPs in my day. Things were a premium back than too. 1/2 a meg was 600 bucks and a full meg could easily run a thousand bucks back in the day.

Yes, in December my jeans touched the USB cable going to an external hard drive (AC powered) and I felt the shock. The USB drive disconnected, and I've randon disconnects of USB drives since then.

:confused: A normal USB cable is insulated, surely?
