Animal abuse makes me sick...but haven't you ever just tapped your dog's butt to show him he was "bad" or lightly pushed him aside when he got in the way?

Rolled up newspaper on the backside got her attention real fast. But mostly she was a great dog, man do I miss her.

WTF? What do you do if your cat/dog craps in the living room? Tell him that you are hurt by his lack of caring?

Usually it is with something that makes more noise than pain, such as newspaper or something to that effect.

There is a difference between grilling a kitten and teaching your dog/cat obedience. If obedience comes at the price of whacking your animal with a newspaper, then so be it. If I had a cat or dog and it was in my way, I would have no problem moving it with my leg.

Well sometimes I fight with my dog. She usually beats the crap out of me... Poll should be 'Does your pet ever hit you?'.

Hitting a pet because they crapped in the living room really doesn't do anything. Neither does smearing it's face in it afterwards. Most dogs aren't smart enough to associate the beating with the pooping.

Wtf. Obviously most of you people never took obedience courses or any sort of training, cause you'd know that you can perfectly train your pet without any sort of abuse whatsoever. Hitting your child is wrong, and hitting your pet is equally so. It's up to you to take the initiative to better train your pet. Hitting it will only make it despise you. Making it your best friend and training it appropriately is the best way to achieve complete obedience, and avoid any problems.

I remember as a kid my dog learned up until he got so old he couldnt help anymore and he was never punished for that..

Never a beating, but a smack in addition to "the stare" and "mad voice" for the rare very bad things like pooping in the house or chewing things up

Corgies are smart little buggers

Swatting them or punishing them is the slow, painful way for both the pet and the owner.
If you want to get results with potty training, it takes some serious commitment. Praise for the desired action, every time, is the most effective way.
I have had plenty of dogs, but my latest is a blast!
He is a Jack Russell terrier that we rescued from an abusive woman, he was headshy and terrified of punishment. He still cowers down when I scold him, although I never ever hit him. Now he is totally over the head shy bit, I can pound on him in fun and he doesn't flinch:)
He is crazy fun, push his buttons, sit on the couch, pick your feet up off the floor, and let the races begin!
I have trained him to run right up me into my arms:D

Have you ever hit/pushed/been violent with your pet?
Is that question a bit like "So...have you stopped beating your wife, yet?"

Sure, I've flicked a cat on the nose a time or two for biting, and a few smacks on the behind was the only way we could get one of our dogs to stop barking whenever someone knocked on the door, rung the doorbell, or just walked by the house. After months of trying a few different behavioral modifications for incessant barking, nothing was working, it was becoming worse, I think.

So I smacked the dog every time she would bark along with the same scolding we were trying before. Within one week's time she got the message.

Animals use pain and fear (intimidation, biting, nipping, pinning to the ground, etc.) to set boundaries and pecking orders in the pack, it is a completely natural technique that animals often respond best to, as long as its done properly.

all the time, but never for no reason. I'm not talking about light pats either, i'm talking hit with my palm so it hurts him and me. Every time you pee on the carpet there goes a bunch of money down the drain. If I lost 20$ my parents would throw me out a window for being so stupid, i'm just passing on how I was brought up :p

My sister is a veterinary technician and has conducted training seminars for dogs. She doesn't teach hitting the pet, although she personally uses it in rare instances for her own dogs, quite frankly because no matter how well you explain the subtleties of animal behavior and modification, some people are hopelessly stupid and are NEVER going to 'get it'. They will completely misread an animal's behavior and misunderstand the crux of what you're trying to tell them.

If you clearly tell them "a little swat on the behind done exactly like [this] is fine but ONLY if the dog is responding in [this] specific way and ONLY if trying [this] or [this] exactly as I've described has not worked", there invariably will be a couple hopelessly stupid people who will interpret that to mean "kicking the living sh-t out of your dog is A-OK".

I have found, with some cats, that spraying them with a little water will teach them not to do things. :)

I get rough with my dog, Scooby, but thats how we play.

I have, on occasion, entertained the notion of beating my fish. When they fight amongst each other, I figured it would be best to show them who's really in charge. And sometimes they arent happy with their food. But theyre going to learn to love it or else. :|

Unfortunately, this is harder than it sounds. A time out in the betta tank works wonders sometimes though. :D
