Have you ever had a CPU die on you for no reason?

You hear of motheboards dying, video cards dying, hard drives dying, but I never really hear of CPUs just dying, unless of course they're OCed too far, given too much voltage, etc. So have you ever had a CPU die on you for pretty much no reason at all? Just out of the blue without doing anything wrong on your part?

I have abused many CPUs (including washing with soap & water and of course overclocking the living sh!t out of them) & never killed one.

Yup. AMD Athlon XP 1800+ Purchased a couple weeks after they first came out, died about two years later. No idea why, cooling was sufficient, ran great and never had a problem with it. One day, it just didn't work.

Yes. That is sad. We should ask Zuni for one.

Just because it's about a CPU doesn't necessarily mean it belongs in that board. It's a very off-topic question.

I've always bought OEM CPUs or CPUs off of eBay in the past, but this time around, spending about $200 on it, I decided I wanted to buy retail and have the 3-year warranty for the piece of mind. I guess for the most part you don't have to worry about it, but a FEW are saying they've had CPUs die for no reason.

the only cpu's that have "died" on me are the ones i hae bashed with hammers, drilled through for keychains, or simply cracked open for the view

Really? I polish my cpu everytime i put on thermal paste.
As do I.
Why in the world do you 2 polish something that is flatter than plate glass? cleaning old paste I could see, but polishing?

well.. lemme tell ya somthing... rubbing alcohol and cpus do not mix.

As long as you dry it thoroughly it shouldn't be a problem.

I've washed probably a dozen CPUs in rubbing alcohol, goo gone, running water, etc. with no issues.

I always used a hair dryer on them before using them again.

I use rubbing alchohol or MEK, and rinse with hot water. It dries in a few minutes if you use hot water. I would be concerned about heating the die up too much with a hair dryer. *shrug*

I had a P3-650 that just died one day. It got flakey, caused some spontaneous reboots, then one day it did not post. I put in another proc and for all I know that motherboard is still working.

I was usually holding them in my hand I'd have been in pain long before the CPU was in danger.
