Have you ever gotten a Straight Razor Shave?

I have always wanted a shave with a straight razor, and after finally finding an upscale barber shop I wanted to ask the opinions of the fellars on ATOT on how it was.

Was it worth the money? Did it hurt? Did u bleed after? Was it really the closest shave you have ever gotten?

Never got one, but they look like they would be a neat experience. Straight razor on the throat, though....perhaps you should TIP first?

Or get insurance? 😛

doesn't hurt if done right, no bleeding. probably was the closest shave i've ever gotten, i think i'd do it again if i had some extremely special event to go to. otherwise do it myself.

Absolutely. There was an old time barber just off base when I was in the military. I would get a shave and haircut from him about twice a month, even if I didn't need either a shave or a haircut. His shop was always crowded.

I've been using a straight razor for over ten years now. I've used disposables when I've run out of blades from time to time and to be honest I can't tell the difference between the two, but I prefer the control I have with the straight razor much better.

Never got one. I like my Remington Titanium better.

That's an electric? If so, there's no comparison between the closest electric shave and the worst blade shave.

I think I'm going to buy a double edge razor soon to try out. I like my mach 3, but I'm curious what else is out there.

I have a safety double edge razor, its by Merkur called the Futura. Its nice, but takes skill otherwise face = hamburger 😉

No, my barber is a psycho. He is good and cheap with haircuts, but as far as placing a razor blade near my neck..... no way.

I've had several traditional "straight" shaves from high-end barbers; two from Art of Shaving (in Las Vegas) and one from Truefitt & Hill (in Chicago). Unfortunately, it largely depends on the skill of the barber. The two I got at AOS were by the same person, with over 20 years experience, and were wonderful. The one I got at T&H was ghastly.

If done correctly, they're a wonderful treat. However, I should note that you can give yourself a shave that is every bit as luxurious just by using a decent setup--mainly a badger hair shaving brush and a good lather shaving cream or soap from a company like AOS, T&H, Trumper, etc.

So is a straight shave actually better than using a Mach3 or something along those lines, besides for the experience?

I get a shave with a straight edge whenever I get a hair cut, it's free, because the lady that cuts my hair charges an arm and a leg for the cut/wash heh. Anyways, no it doesn't hurt, you don't bleed unless the barber is unsteady, and yes it is extremely close because it takes off the top layer of skin. Safety razors do not do this so they only get the hair above the skins surface.

I always get the back of my neck and sideburns shaved with a straight razor. Been wanting to buy one for the beard, but never have. Based on this thread, sounds like it might be a worthwhile investment...

I've thought about doing it myself for normal every day shaving, but it seems like too much trouble to have to do often....as if shaving isn't annoying enough
