My dad did like 8 years ago... it was a biatch cuz my mom had to drive him everywhere after that... he owns a small chain of bars and that day was the only day that he's driven home intoxicated, and although I know ther'es no reason for doing so, he had just recieved news that his mother and father were both diagnosted with cancer. They passed away about a year later.

I too have fallen in this catagory:(

But with age we grow wiser I can say I haven't been legally drunk and driven in 6 years!

You remind me of my neighbor. He's been out drinking and driving countless times. There will come a day if both you and he continue this behavior that you will either hurt or kill yourself or someone else.

It's sad how many lessons people insist on learning the hard way.

I can't speak for your neighbor but that day will never arrive for me. I quit being that kind of stupid a long time ago. I look back on those days and shake my head in disbelief at how lucky I was to have survived.

edit: also note that i said "according to the law". being legally drunk does not necessarily mean you are incapable of driving.

I'm glad you've stopped. If you re-read my post, I conditioned it with if you "continue" the behavior. You have stopped. :)

My neighbor, however, is not quite as smart. He's creeping up to around 30 years old now, and still drinks and drives. It's terrible. :(

Yeah, I haven't stopped drinking but I rarely do more than social drinking and even then I always have my wife with me to drive when needed. One of the perks of being married to a woman who rarely drinks. :)

Ditto :) I like the way you think, BrunoPuntzJones :D

Never have, never will. Way too much at stake such as job, license, money, and most importantly, other people's lives.

Nope. I also have cut out the chart from DMV of how much you have to wait after whatever number of drinks, so if I have been drinking, I wait till I am legit. And then I drive slow too.
This guy I know bought a brand new bimmer convertible, drove home drunk, fell asleep on the road, and sorta brushed another car in a neighbor lane. Now his car is damaged with less then 1000 miles on it, he has DUI on his record, and his license is suspended for 6 months. Not worth it.

People need to quit automatically demonizing folks that get DUI's. Yes it's wrong, and there is really no excuse for it, but not everyone who gets one is a repeat drunk driver, and many that get one get pulled for other violations such as speeding or having a tail light out and the cop gets lucky he when smells alcohol. Just because you blow a .08 on a breathalizer dosn't mean you are any less fit to drive than half the other morons on the road who've had nothing to drink at all.

nope never have...whenever i used to go out to bars or anywhere drinking when i lived in Baltimore or NYC i would just take cabs...Now that i live in LA its harder cause they are so far away...usually i just wait around at a friends place for a couple hours until i feel like i am fine again...but it sux cause i never know for sure...I am always at the point where i know i wouldnt get pulled over on suspicion, since i always wait till I know i can drive with no problem...but what i always worry about if say someone was to hit me, i have no clue if i would pass a breathalyzer, since i never took one i dont know what level is exactly breaking the law...

this just got me thinking, that maybe i should go pick up one of those personal breathalyzers since i do go out to bars here in LA. Does anyone know any somewhat inexpensive place to buy one of these?

<< no, because I'm not a dumbass. It's not like you don't have a control over it. Anyone who gets DUII deserve to have their license suspended and driving during this suspension should carry a jail sentence. >>

Jerboy,

You haven't even grown pubic hair. Come back and talk your trash after your balls drop.

An excellent example of the type of thinking engaged in by one who has a problem with alcohol.

Huh? You think you know everything about someone by one sentence?
I haven't drunk in 2 months, and even before that, I went to bars like once every 2 months and drunk one or two drinks each time.
I am an engineer, so I go with the spec ;) If it says I have to wait 2 hours after I drink 2 drinks, I make sure I wait that long. I don't see a problem with that.

Never received a citation for DUI but that isn't because I've never done it, I just got extremely lucky. I've driven UI a good 50 or 60 times, one of the benefits of living way out in the boonies and farm country where you drive through no heavily policed areas.

When I say "UI" I am referring to questionably being over the legal limit, not necessarily being fall-down sloppy drunk. Anywhere from impaired driving (lesser than intoxication) after having a couple drinks in a short amount of time to having several drinks + over a few hours. I was pulled over once and was probably legally intoxicated but the officer (a State Trooper) didn't even question it.

At the same time, there were many nights I didn't drive because I knew was just plain too drunk, the staggering kind of drunk. In my experience, most people have driven at least once when they shouldn't have, being legally intoxicated doesn't necessarily mean falling down drunk and swirving in front of on-coming traffic. Its extremely easy to pretend you're perfect on some anonymous internet forum vs. being in the company of people who know better.

For many people, the question is interpreted as "have you ever driven while you were drunk", implying the staggering, swearing, sloppy kind of drunk, and so they answer "no way, not me, I'd never do that", but if you ask them "have you ever driven a motor vehicle after having a few drinks" their answer changes markedly: "Oh sure...but I wasn't drunk."

yep...young and dumb

In fact, I cant think of more than 10 people I used to hang out with that haven't had at least one DUI. That's pretty freakin sad

In fact, by the time I turned 21, I had already lost my drivers license 6 times...maybe there were just too many cops back home
