Have you ever experienced DT's ?? (Delirium tremens = alcohol withdrawal)

I want to say no, but the shakes experienced during a really bad hangover come oh so close to the tremors of Delirium Tremens.

i was under the assumption that heavy use of nearly any mind altering substance with an abrupt stop could cause them... its not unheard of for people who quit smoking cigs to get them

i was under the assumption that heavy use of nearly any mind altering substance with an abrupt stop could cause them... its not unheard of for people who quit smoking cigs to get them

Not personally of course, but a family member went through it. It was a sobering situation in every meaning. The hallucinations were the worst and most frightening; nothing like talking to to someone you've lived with your whole life that can't acknowledge who you are, but somehow they acknowledge someone/something else in the room.

Where is your data? Someone exaggerating their withdrawal symptoms and calling it DTs hardly makes it so. Considering the cause of DTs I don't see how it's even medically possible for smoking withdrawal to produce them, but if you furnish data I'll change my opinion.

Again, withdrawal symptoms != DTs.

Not quite sure, but if not I've been damn close. Had the shakes, cold/fever, weird thoughts but never saw spiders attacking me. I've talked to people who went through it big time and it's nothing short of pure hell. (unmatched except by heavy opiate/benzodiaprine use)
 
you have to be dependent on alcohol for such a thing to happen for a long period. It happens b/c your nerve cells are used to a depressant being around... when that depressant is removed they become hyper-active.

It acts on so many different receptors that your brain/body is dealing with several issues at once, equal to stopping several drugs all at once. (compared to mu loving opiates) It's the GABA system which takes the major hit though, same with benzos or GHB. Throw in whatever mental crutch it was being used for and things get even worse.

You get DT's from stopping depressants because the effect of stopping a depressant after long usage is like a stimulant to the body. (Read about neurotransmitter receptor site blockages in nerve cells if you want an education.)

My friend is getting off of Benzo, which is also a depressant.
