multiple times
growing up in illinois i was very curious and amazed by tornados and lightning
my closest encounter was me being very idiotic
i was 16 years old, got sent home from work (swiss colony) due to big ass storms
30 minutes after i got home we had tornado warnings and the wind was ripping corn from the field next to my house and blowing it down the streets
my mom, who is handicapped demanded that i go into the basement - but she couldn't go
I stepped onto the back deck to see how severe things were
i stayed close to the house and inched my way to the corner of the deck
i looked out into the field and seen the twister
it would touch down for a few seconds, then go back up, then touch down
as it moved closer the rain stopped and corn leaves and stalks filled the air
i could hear the shingles getting ripped off of our roof and panels of aluminum siding peeling from our house
i hugged the hand-rail of the deck with both arms as it got closer - within 100 yards
it ended up missing our town for the most part
the only damage was to the houses on my street and the junk yard/recycle center at the other side of the corn field (buttloads of water heaters and scrap metal were picked up and moved to the field)
