I had a shady insurance company back date a policy(1 year) for me when the cars finance company wanted proof of coverage.

I believe you don't have to have insurance if you can prove that you have over x dollars in the bank.

i drove a car for about 7 months that was borrowed and had no insurance in the car. I figured that if i got pulled over they would just arrest me for stealing it.

That's correct.

I believe here in Michigan it's $300K that they will put a hold on which won't allow you withdraw the funds.

When I bought my last car, I called and added it to my insurance policy while the salesman was filling out the purchase paperwork :)

Never. I look at car insurance as a prerequisite to starting the engine on a car. Plus, it's the law here in MI.

Yes, but only because my payment was hung up in the mail for three or four days around renewal time. I was technically without insurance for a few days, but I've never gone without it purpousfully.

Yup, pre-insurance-requirement in CA, I'd drive it sans insurance. Of course, that was prolly only for a month or two until I actually finally applied to get car insurance.

Yes, but only because I missed 2 months of payments and didn't notice until I got a letter from Mercury. After that, I switched to AAA because Mercury pissed me off!!

Of course it was their fault that I missed my payments! ;)
