Question: Have you ever donated to medical research? If so, what did you donate toward, and was it to fight a disease that affects you personally or someone in your family? What made you want to donate?

I've donated to mental health causes since I have a friend who struggles with certain mental afflictions.

I give annually to the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. Leukemia has killed WAY to many people I have known, including some close friends.

I have donated my own blood and medical records to research hospitals that are investigating the cause of and treatments for Guillain Barre syndrome (GBS). I contracted GBS in early 2007 and it is scary as hell. Despite having a "mild" case I still ended up in the hospital for 10 days and I could not walk properly for almost 6 months.

I've donated blood since the 80's. Does that count as a "yes", "no" or perhaps "maybe"?

The wife & I donate to St. Jude's, and I'm assuming part of that goes to research.

A huge part of it does. St. Judes is one of the few that i don't think about tossing money to.

from its wiki article: In 2002 to 2004, 47% of program expenses went to patient care and 41% to research.[19] As of 2012, 81 cents of every dollar donated to St. Jude goes directly to its research and treatment

If a child is cared for at st judes they don't pay a penny. also the family is put in a place to live while they are in treatment.

unfortnantly we got real familer with them. a girl on my daughters gym team came down with cancer and went to St. Judes. she ended up losing a leg.

Also many gyms around here hold a tournament where all procedes go to St. Judes.

edit: lol sorry for the preachy post on ST. judes.

anyway about the OP's post. besides giving to St judes we have done medical studies. Since i have some medical problems and deaf we have been asked to participate in a few. Last one was from a deaf parent with hearing kids. on how they learn to speak. both kids go in every summer and talk with researchers who test them on hearing nad how they speak.

I donate to Heart & Stroke and the Canadian Diabetes Association. Worth it? I think so. My Granddad had heart disease and diabetes later in life. It's what killed him. The technology 20 years ago versus what they have now probably could have given him another few years.

I donated as a sponsor for a friend doing a breast cancer run. I considered it an extra wedding present since she'd gotten married recently.

I don't normally donate to medical charities because I'm not confident that the money will be well-spent.

I do donate to Child's Play, where I get to pick out the toys and know exactly where they are going (see you in November 🙂 ) .

I also donate to the Seattle Times Fund, which is like the United Way without the graft -- the newspaper covers all admin expenses, 100% of my donation goes to local nonprofits. Also to Northwest Harvest which supplies food banks throughout Washington state.

Yeah, cancer research 2-3 times a year.
I know my contribution isn't doing much, but as a whole, I believe cancer funds do help find cures.

I really don't know where it goes though.

there was a guy outside the grocery store asking if we wanted to donate to breast cancer. it made me wonder what the hell was breast cancer going to do for me? 😀

I donate to friends and family who do walks / bike rides / runs and need to raise money. It happens a few times a year usually. Also donated to that ALS fundraiser when it was going around

I'm doing a 192 mile bike ride across the state for Dana-Farber in a couple months and have no idea how to raise the money D:

I consider I donate everyday as I am an active member of F@H, otherwise I have not directly donated cash money to a cause.

and by "a friend" you mean every forum poster ever?

You seem insensitive to the issue. Yes, forums might be an outlet for many people who have anxiety disorders or social phobias, but what alternatives do you suggest for them? You should read up on mental health and the way it's affecting a huge amount of population around the world.

After I'm done using it, I intend to donate my brain to Stanford's Center for Narcolepsy so that it can be sliced-up, stained, and looked at microscopically. Histology of the brain (specifically, hypothalamus) has lead to some important key insights or clues into the pathology of narcolepsy in the past 15 years.
