Have you ever completely run out of gas?

My dad, the same one who called me crazy and a psycho, ran out of gas today in one of the town's busiest intersections. I had to drive out and bring him gas for his van. It was embarrassing as hell running out there with a gas tank in my hand. How many times have you guys run out of gas?

EDIT: Oh yeah, my dad told me that was the third time it happened to him.

Only once. My gauge didn't show that the car was empty. I was on my way to school when it happened. Luckily I was very close to a gas station and a car mechanic. The man at the shop had a gas tank and took my husband to get some gas for the car.

Has never happened to me again and I hope it doesn't.

Nevar! It's been close a few times, but I keep track of my usual milage, and know just how far I can push it.

Once about 6 years ago in the middle of nowhere between Amarillo and Witchita Falls Texas......about 15 miles to the closest town with a gas pump.

Literally got a ride in the back of a farmer's pick up truck and he was nice enough
to give me a ride back to my car after getting the gas.

I've run out of gas twice in the same car. The gas gauge doesn't work so I have to use the trip meter to guess how much gas I have left. Guess I didn't guess too well these times.

In a car? Never. Lawnmower? Yeah, once in awhile, but I'm within a short distance of the gas can.

Ran out of gas on one of my bikes once. Luckily, I was near a construction area where they were building condos when it happened. Unluckily, the only fuel they had onsite was diesel. But one of the crew guys was heading out to pickup lunch, so he drove me to a gas station and then back to the site. Really decent guys.

Once..I'm in the same boat as mike, my gas gauge doesn't work, so I use the trip meter. I didn't realise how much extra gas my car was gunna use up in -20 degree weather though :)

My buds and I have an RV that we take to sporting events, etc. Twice we drove the damn thing to empty. Both times it read that we had 1/2 a tank left.

And once my buddy put diesel in it, instead of the needed unleaded. Syphoning 50 gallons of diesel out of an RV is quite fun.

My Integra's gas light comes on with 3 gallons left which makes for a good hour and a half of driving or so.

Twice, both in my 78 Jeep Wagoneer. Somebody had taken the dash apart or something previously, and the fuel gauge would get stuck sometimes, and the cover for it was loose. I had to actually lean over and tap on it sometimes to find out how much gas I had.
Once it had apparently had just enough gas to get me to work, and I had to get more before I could drive home. The other time I was maybe a quarter of a mile from a gas station, so the walk wasn't too bad.

I was driving a cargo van (for work) on the highway at 75mph when the engine started to sputter. My first thought was that the POS van's engine had finally kicked the bucket. I was trying to get over to the shoulder (at what little speed I had left) when I realized the fuel gauge was on empty and the warning light was on. I flipped the fuel tank switch and breathed a huge sigh of relief when the engine came back to life and I found out the second tank was still half full.
