I knew him since 1st grade through 7th until I moved, and while I pretty much lost contact with him, I like to do e-stalking and have discovered that he does indie music and generally seems like a socially successful person. Now I see his face next to a bunch of creepy old men, for charges of "POSSESS[ing] OR CONTROL[ing] OBSCENE MATTER DEPICTING MINOR IN SEXUAL CONDUCT". 😵

Granted, for all I know he has a 17 year old girlfriend and a blurry picture of her nude, but still.

I hope that's the case and that he is affected as minimally as possible.

And I can't help being paranoid about my neighbors. At the breadstore a week ago the (male 50-something) cashier gave me a fairly creepy wink, and at 7-11 a few days later there was a total flamer behind the desk (probably early 40's) that kept giving me comments like "Where'th your jackeeeet? Aren't you coooold?" and stuff. Curiosity always gets me.

I checked the registry for my area after someone who lived a block away had sex with his mom, killed her, then had sex with her again. He had been on the list, and I wanted to see how many other sickos we had.

Don't be so quick to judge him. Those registries are way way overpopulated. A friend's son made it for inadvertantly downloading a few kiddie porn pictures among rather large zip collections he downloaded. No evidence at all he passed the pictures on, made any money, etc. Result is a college freshman is branded for life. Under GWB the Attorney General's office had a major drive to ring up large numbers of convictions of "internet sex offenders" and a lot of chumps became collateral damage to win political points.

I'm morally opposed to the registry, so no I don't look. There's a very good chance that someone on it, is on there for bullshit reasons, so it's pointless to even look. It's tabloid fodder for bored housewives who somehow have managed to learn computer operation.

Unfortunately the "everyone is a sex offender" movement makes society less safe. Did y'all read that book about a boy crying wolf? The point of the story is that a term loses all meaning if it is used too often. Now that urinating in public will get you on the sex offender registry, being labeled as a sex offender doesn't have the meaning it once had. Now someone can say they are a sex offender, you'll assume they just pissed in the ally or something, but in reality they're convicted of something serious like rape.
